two 16 ohm speakers in my ppc 212 ob?

Post by kars0747 » Sun Apr 30, 2017 11:05 pm

Help me please. I have a 1971 g12h 16 ohm greenback which I am unable to use in my 212 16 ohm cab which contains two g12h 8 ohms. My question is: Can i run two 16 ohm speakers in my cab and if yes how do I wire them? My second question is: Can I put an 8 ohm and a 16 ohm speaker together in the same cab? I know that the 8 ohm will take most of the sound. Is there some way of preventing that? I mean the ad50 has both an 8 ohm out and a 16 ohm out and the cab has two 16 ohm in. Can you do something with the wiring in order to run an 8 ohm amp and a 16 ohm amp together at about same level?

no . The only thing you can do is put the 16 ohm cab in one 8 ohm out, and the 16 ohm speaker on its own in the other 8 ohm out.

You have to run two 16 ohm speakers in parallel in a 2x12 cab, which will yield an 8 ohm load. Like this:

It's possible, but I wouldn't recommend it. You'd have to run them in parallel, which would yield a 5.3 ohm load. That would be a mismatch, no matter what output transformer tap you ran them off, and as you stated, the 8 ohm speaker would do more work.

The speaker out jacks are wired to different taps on the output transformer secondary. You can not use two different taps at the same time.

There is typically only one 16 ohm jack, as it would be quite uncommon to have a 16 ohm load from multiple cabs. The 8 ohm jacks are both wired to a single tap on the output transformer, they are connected together internally.

As Jon mentioned, you can run the 16 ohm speaker in its own cabinet, and run a 2nd cabinet with your two 8 ohm speakers in series (16 ohm load). That would yield an 8 ohm load for the amp, and as such, each cab would get plugged into one of the 8 ohm jacks. But you can't really run mismatched speakers in a cab together, unless you're willing to take on some element of risk.

Thanks. I am going the greenback 25 watt route instead. I have a feeling I will never like any 30watt speakers. And I like the less db sensitivity
