Orange AD30r Tube issue

Post by Turley71 » Sat Apr 02, 2016 11:55 pm

Hello all,
I have an Orange AD30r I have an issue where the reverb isn't working, but ill get that later.
On checking the amp, I noticed that the pre amp valves are labeled as followed ECC83, ECC81, ECC83. But when i took the valve out, there are 2 E83CC valves and 1 ECC83, so there is no ECC81 valve in the amp? and they are all stock orange valves, and the other thing i noticed was that the 2 E83CC valves glow red as all the the other valves do but the ECC83 does not glow at all?
also the ECC83 does look different to the 2 E83CC valves, so is this normal? and which valve should go in the ECC81 socket?

but back to why i was checking the amp in the first place is that the reverb is not working, and i have no idea why?

any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

When reverb doesn't work I am first suspicious of the reverb pan. While I can't speak about the Orange reverb pans, I had a Fender Twin with a reverb pan that would often have a wire disconnect inside the pan. Very easy fix....

from what i can tell, the reverb unit itself is working, if you touch the reverb spring you can hear the reverb, so the output side is working, i think its the input that isnt working i think, the guitar signal just isnt getting to the reverb as far as i can tell.

on doing a bit more reading, i gather that one of the pre amp tubes is supposed to the reverb driver? is that right? and which one is it?

Is the ECC81 meant to be the reverb tube?

My bet is that someone put in an ECC83 in a (probably vain) attempt at boosting the underwhelming reverb level. The AD30 reverb isn't great. Nice but not much of it.

ECC8x valves are usually interchangeable, but they have different optimum ranges for the components you put around them. It might be that the reverb valve has gone bad?
