Caps not Specified

Please let me know if this has already been discussed...
I'm curious, if a schematic does not specify any type of capacitor besides the polarized/electrolytics, technically can any non-polarized cap be used in the build/repair/mod?
Paper film, ceramic, mica, polypropylene, etc etc?

Not too keen on the differences between them all and their specific properties, but as long as they fall into spec?
That being said, many schematics I've seen are rather vague. Including max voltage and capacitance only...
