Re: 1979 Orange OR145 Bass Combo Circuit Schematic/Diagram
I built a subkick kick drum mic from a small tom; used a 8" subwoofer as a mic; wired it up with an L-pad; drilled and mounted an XLR jack on the side and voila! Instant subkick for a lot less than what a Yamaha would cost....
Re: 1979 Orange OR145 Bass Combo Circuit Schematic/Diagram
A friend that subs with us on drums every now and again posted a pic recently of him using two mics on his bass drum: a D112 for snap and a homemade subkick made from a car 6x9 speaker wired up to an xlr cable and hanging by its frame with a large alligator clip. I'm sure there were some dinosaurs rolling in their crusts on that one.
mmmmmm drop

I think I may have busted my AT-2020 trying to make my own ribbon microphone motor. I am wondering if I should get really custom with this microphone, and hand wire the components, as well as the motor- have a little bit of a better idea of what is going on.
Just a few questions:
Would you guys happen to have any pictures of these homemade microphones?
Does anyone know what the pickup frequency is dependent on more- the microphone, or motor?
When homebuilding a microphone, does one also have to build the preamp, or is it possible to rig it to USB? (I did try, with little success- got a lot of fuzz, but was able to pickup some desired sound waves as well.)
When it comes time to build the microphone and amplifier, are there any necessary precautions I should take before hooking up the power supply?

You should try Tape Op magazine

Does anyone know if any if the presence/contour knobs on the OR145/SuperBass are those types of knobs that "stick," to a specific rotational mark, instead of floating free, as in being able to rotate the knob from 1.0-2.0, and everything in between, rather than only have 1.0 and 2.0?

The contour switch is definitely a five position switch. All the rest are just potentiometers.

Thank you, kind sir. I am hoping the build will start around the start of the new year. I have yet to hollow out the log I will be using as a shell and foundation, as it is still very fresh off the trunk, and it needs to dry to allow the cracking to take place prior to the drill and chisel process. 'Hoping to find some nice tubes and components online, not really sure what to look for- I guess what ever will fit into my budget.

Would anyone happen to know what I would need to do to modify the circuit, in order to have two EL34s instead of the SuperBass' four?

Almost certainly all you'd need to do would be to pull two output valves (one from each side) and lower the amps output impedance by half to compensate for the effective change in output impedance.
So for an 8 ohm speaker load you'd run the amp at 4 ohms.
This is normally absolutely fine to do with four valve fixed biased amps. Not knowing the Super Bass specifically I can't 100% guarantee it, but I should think you'd be fine doing that.
Andy.

Yeah, this is all you need to do, I've done it with my amp and gigged with it like that, no problems.
Re: 1979 Orange OR145 Bass Combo Circuit Schematic/Diagram
My next question: how do I go about doing that?

Re: 1979 Orange OR145 Bass Combo Circuit Schematic/Diagram
Around each of the power tubes you'll see some other parts duplicated one per tube. For each tube you eliminate(in this case 2) you'll need to eliminate one set of these duplicate parts. Study the schematic for a while, it will start to make sense.
Re: 1979 Orange OR145 Bass Combo Circuit Schematic/Diagram
That makes sense. I guess my main question is how do I go about switching it to 4 ohms instead of 8? And then one more question, and I should be good to go... Can I use different brands of tubes in the same circuit, as in one EL34 from one company, and the other EL34 from a different company, and then same with the 12AX7's?

Preamp tubes, yes.
Output tubes, your best bet is to used matched tubes and the matching is easier when you use tubes from the same manufacturer.
