Orange TH30 powering two cabs

Post by radneyspot » Fri Jan 24, 2014 8:40 pm

Hello everyone, I have TH30 dual chanel head and PPC 412AD 16ohm cab and another 412 Randall cab which can be changed to 4 or 8 ohm. Can I use both cabinets or will I damage may amp?

H radneyspot. Welcome!

Check the manual and you'll see that to run two cabs safely with your amp they must both be 16 ohm cabs. Choices are one or two 16 ohm cabs or a single 8 ohm cab.

Sorry! :(

damn. you're right. i mis-read that. so if i plug two 8 ohm cabs in there i'm presenting 4 ohms to the amp. bummer. my cabs are all 8 ohms. i may have to think about selling my th30 now as i LOVE the sound of multiple cabinets.

Hi,

depending how many speakers your cabs have, you can rewire them to get 16ohm each

Are you sure the Randall cab doesn't have a 16 ohm input on the back?
Many of them are 4 ohm or 16 ohm in mono and 8 ohm in stereo

it's an option but that won't happen. i'll sell the th30 first. i guess i'll just have to live with only using one 2x12 cabinet.

or i could try the impedance matching box...for $90. cheap solution.

A Serial Cable (or box) would allow you to connect two 8-ohm cabs together as a 16-ohm total load. That would be the cheapest and easiest solution.

On that:

You'd have to be ultra careful to always use it though - the mismatch without would be well outside safe limits.
