1971 Orange 8x10 power handling?

Post by nickdooley » Tue Dec 07, 2010 8:33 pm

Hey guys!

I just recently bought an Orange 8x10 from 1971 off of eBay. I am re-doing my entire rig so I still have to buy a new head. Only problem is that the seller doesn't know the power handling of it, and I've been looking everywhere for any info but its impossible to find, so I thought I would ask all of you. If anyone has any information on this beaut of a cab please let me know!

Thanks!

Welcome!

Well, I wouldn't even hazard a guess because you don't know after almost 40 years whether the speakers inside are original or not. My advice is to pull one of the speakers and see what's written on the back. If they're all the same, all the better but if there are different speakers in it, you might want to check and see what they are...

I'll be using it for bass but definitely gunna try it with a guitar!

So no one knows exactly what it would be? I have to buy a new head and would like to make the drive down to U.S only once!

Well, if you have to make assumptions, plan on 15 watts per speaker (120 watts total). Chances are that it will be able to handle at least that much. You should plan on opening up the cab for inspection before you put much power through it though. If it's not wired correctly or if it has bad speaker(s), you could have serious problems that could affect the amp as well.

I'll inspect it before anything runs through it! Thanks for your help

OKAY NEWS FROM THE SELLER ABOUT THE SPEAKERS!!!

The speakers in it do not have a power rating. He has been using a 120 watt head with it. There was an older orange 2x15 on CL a while back that was rated at 120 watts to match the orange bass head from that year. So this one could be either more? But no one really knows...

Did you get any pictures from the seller that show the speakers, specifically a serial number/date stamp?

Here's what you need to do when you get it- take off the back and see what kind of speakers are in there- specifically, write down numbers on all speakers and note brand, etc. If nothing is on them, they should be able to be ID'd by cosmetics. More than likely, they will have written the model of the speaker and we can look it up for rating, etc. Then you can have a clearer idea of power load...

If it was me, I would first take a 9 volt battery to the end of a plugged in speaker cable and make sure all 8 speakers move in the same direction or just move at all so you know that they all work.

Shame about whoever the idiot was that set a beer on top that spilled down the front!

Congratulations on buying the best-looking cab ever made! You might be able to clean up the grill cloth a bit if you take the speakers out and get a spray bottle full of water. Come to think of it, you might take out the speakers anyhow if you can afford to put some quality bass drivers in it for use with a modern high-powered bass head. That way you could set the old speakers aside for safe-keeping to avoid damaging them. Then you could get an Orange Terror Bass 500!

Yeah, great looking cab. Congratulations on that.

Definitely a shame about the beer but hopefully it'll clean up a bit.

I'm really curious as to what drivers will be in there. I'm kind of hoping that it will have something like the old 15W '7442' Celestions in it. Those are amongst the sweetest drivers of any size I've ever heard and used, (sound great for bass too), and would make for a truly FANTASTIC sounding cab. Sure it will be anyway! :D

I just hope you don't have as many stairs as I do to your front door though...

I wouldn't suggest this- the baffle board's black paint will run if it gets wet and permanently stain the grille cloth. Be extremely careful- I don't think you can actually clean the grille cloth....

How do you know that this cab is from 1971? Is it dated?
