Hi ! I'm Fred. New owner of an:
AD200 Bass S.No #45 MKI
It's equiped with 1* ECC83 Mulard, 1* ECC81 Mulard and 4*6550 EHX.
And new member here.
Could you help me ?
I Can't get a real continous drive with. Gain by 2/3: a little bit (warm but not really Drive), and after it's more a uncontinous distorsion in the very high ends.
Could I try other pre-amp Valves ? May be it's completly normal for an AD 200 (MK1) ?
Thanks in advance !
How to have more Drive on an AD200 (MKII ?) ?

Your serial number suggests it might actually be a MK I edition...

Hi !
Do you know the time frame of MKI edition ?
thanks...
By the Treble only at 1/4, I became a nicer warm Drive now.
I have to tame the beast, it's quiet different to my Mosfet Amps...

Nice score on the MkI!!! I spice up my MkIII with a Fulltone BassDrive. It gives the mids an extra punch. The super lows get cut slightly, but I keep the overdrive at about 9 o'clock and the volume consistent so that I can switch it off when I need a smoother super low sound.

I also use a Valve drive from EBS to drive up my sound on a EBS Fafner.
But for a full Valves Amp I fought that I don't need an extra drive.
How ever, yesterday I had to play loud on stage for an outside concert, and I get a warm driven sound
Let's tame further

And I love that sound too, but a lot of the smaller places that we play, especially in the winter, require us to keep the stage volume in check, so the Fulltone helps out the tone at lower volumes. I keep it on for probably 75% of the gig.

I see.
Well, I will try at the next repetition by maintining the Gain at 2 O'clock. Let's see !
The MKIII has a third Pre-amp valve I think, doesn't it crunch faster ?
Do somebody know exactly the differences between the three versions ?

Re: How to have more Drive on an AD200 (MKII ?) ?
I've never played a MkI or MkII, but my understanding is that the MkIII does break up faster because of the extra preamp tube. In fact, I have a 5751 in the V2 of my MkIII because I felt that it did break up too fast, especially if the master was cranked.
The only other difference that I know of is that AD200BMkI and MKII had the same head case and chassis as the AD140 which means that you won't be able to fit anything but narrow bottle 6550's in it. The good news about that is that narrow bottle 6550's are more prevalent, but the bad news is that most KT88's will not fit. I don't know if anyone has tried the coke bottle Tung Sol reissue 6550's in a MkI or MkII either but I would think that they very well might not fit.
