Sound difference between 4x12 and 2x12??

Post by rossross » Sat Apr 11, 2009 5:19 pm

Hi there.

I have been renting a 4x12 for shows here in London for a while now and I am about to buy my own but it would be so much better for me to have a 2x12, for size, storage and weight.

I am concerned about getting the 2x12 in case it has a different sound. Is it basically just half the size or does it have a different sound?

Thanks for any advice :)

Ross.

A 212 won't sound as full as a 412.
The importance of the fullness in a 412 to me all depends on what kind of music I play. If you're rocking hard, you might need that 412 for that extra thump, but if you're one of two guitarists in a pop-rock band the 412 might just be overkill.

I had the luxury of playing my AD30HTC head through the orange 4x12 and the 2x12 at the store. I preferred the 4x12 much more. It seemed that the amp had a lil more headroom in the 4x12 than the 2x12 on the exact same settings.

Both are similar but the 4x12 does have a thicker bottom end sound which either clashes with the bass player or fills it out nicely depending on your band mix. If you are being miced up most of the time it makes no difference to anyone else because they hear the cone miced up. If you're not miced up, it only matters to you and the first couple of rows because it cant push that low mid back past a few bodies anyway.
