I posted just about a week ago with pictures of my OR 120 that was just rebuilt. last night we were practicing, i'm in a 2 piece and really need an awesome amp like this orange to cut though. just guitar and drums. i finally got our settings perfect to where we loved the tone, btw, possibly the best tone i have ever heard! this amp is amazing! we jammed for about and hour and a half. we were mid-song when all of a sudden, no more guitar. we look over at the amp and it's piling out smoke! YELLOW CHEMICAL like smoke! my heart crushed into a million pieces. we had to vent out the studio. i called my amp tech last night at about 11:00pm, just to let him know what happened. I heard back from him today, i'll be dropping it back off on friday. so...
anyone ever experience a smoke storm like this? possible causes, what am i looking at in terms of repair cost? worst/best case senario? i'm so devistated, i really love this thing!
and yes, the impedance of the head and cab were matched :)

Yellow smoke? Could be a blown cap. Hopefully that'll all it'll be so it a fairly easy fix.

Yellow!?! That's nasty! What did it smell like? Did the sound change radically when it was smoking?

if it was smelling like a dead old fish...it was a cab... but i never saw yellow smoke (except my time at the army but this smoke was orange)

definetly not the cab, we finished up practice with a peavey classic 50 using the same cab. another great amp but really no comparison! as for the sound...it just shut off, along with the power. it was like the orange was giving us it's last little bit of awesomeness right before it went up in yellow smoke. smelled terrible, like a chemical plant. i haven't taken the chassi out, i'm afraid to be perfectly honest. what i can say is that without taking it out i can see that the power tubes look fine.

oh!!! I'm really hoping it's something as easy as a cap, but i'm preparing for the worst. having a new transformer is my vintage orange is not all that appealing. would a blown cap really cause all that smoke?

Yeah, I'm willing to bet that's just a cap. If it blew short or partially short it would overheat, cook the dielectric, and blow your fuse. Check your fuses, if they're blown, there's at least a chance you're just in need of a cap job. Good luck, man!

...and I'll be sure to feel like a jerk if we've unneccesarily gotten your hopes up and it turns out to be a tranny....

Kinda kidding - 'cause that would suck.

I wanted the follow-up on this thread....I know it is old as $$### but I am reviving it in hopes we find out if it was just a cap or not!
