Hi, i'm new here and wanted to ask if anyone knows of any amp techs around the Manchester, UK area? I have bought an OR120 head off of Ebay and the guy seems to think one of the transformers has gone (not sure which one). Also, it hasnt been used in about 7 or 8 years. I have had a look in side (couldnt resist! :D) and cleaned the dust and spiders webs out of it. I dont want to attempt to power it up in case something goes bang and i dont want to tinker about with it myself. I want a good amp tech to check it out and tell me how much to get it fixed.

Thanks

Simon

Hi, i asked Matamp and the said that they didnt have any dealing with Orange anymore and that they couldnt help. I was quite disappointed by their attitude, i had heard many good things about their services.

Are the transformers in a Matamp the same as the transformers in an Orange? Can i get replacements for my OR-120 from Matamp, or am i best off getting them from Orange or someone else like Mercury Magnetics?

Thanks

Simon

I'm sorry to hear that about Matamp too. Not so good! <img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle>
MM transformers are supposed to be pretty good. I think that the Orange ones from the AD140 will do the job too, but you'd maybe better check with Orange themselves on that, just to be sure.

Hi Andy, i had much better luck with Orange. I spoke to a tech guy called Adrian who told me that Rockerverb 100 trannies will work fine. Problem is i now have to find someone to put them in as well as re-cap it and stick in new valves. I dont want to have to send it to Orange unless i have to. I'm hoping i can get hold of a tech around Manchester. Failing that, i'll ship it off to Orange when i have a few hundred quid spare.

Hi I'm an Amp Tech ( & guitarist )in Dublin. I have a co. called Aladdins Amps.
I have worked on several 70's OR120's, and use one as my main amp!!
It may be cheaper for you to ship the amp over here as I think Dublin
is nearer to you than London.
Anyway if you want me to answer any tech questions I'd be happy to help.
Cheers, Mark.

Simon,

The chances of both the transformers in the head being bad are next to nothing. The output transformer is always a possibility. But a bad power transformer is usually very very rare...BOTH of them is completely out of the question.

Get the amp to a reputable tech. Tell them the amp doesn't work, and to fix it. That's all the info a tech should need, and any more than that could set you up to be ripped off if you take it to the wrong person.

FWIW, I replaced a blown output transformer in my OR-120 with an AD-140 OT. I also bought a GRO100 that didn't have the original OT, and I replaced that with an AD-120 OT as well. It's a drop in replacement, and works fine.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the offer Mark, i may take you up on that if i cant get hold of a tech round here. I have the number of an old guy called Dave Lunt from Stockport. If i cant get hold of him, i'll consider sending it elsewhere.

I suppose there is little difference in transformer between the AD140 and the rockerverb 100. They cant of changed that much in 30 years if they fit my amp.

Thanks

Simon
