Hi, I need to replace my power valves. I'm ordering a matched set of 4 svetlana kt88's winged c's. Can I just put them straight in or would I need to get a tech to set the bias?

Its safer to get a tech to bias it. You can in theory plug them in but if the bias is wrong, it could do more than just knacker the new tubes. I dont tend to worry too much unless i'm going to thrash the amp, but its safer to get it biased.

Definitely, definitely, definitely, go to a tech to get the bias set correctly. The KT88's will run a bit differently compared to the stock 6550's, which the rebias will account for.

Ok, just off the phone to a amp tech in Dundee. He said that no way should I put kt88's into my ad200. Too powerful he says! Any thoughts guys?

(Spacing issue? You've got a Mk 3 though...)

Too powerful? Er...you can put KT88s in a 50 watt Marshall if you want. KT88s only generate such huge power outputs by taking close to 1KV through the B+. Of course, your tech should know that ;) Maybe change a few of the dropper resitors in the B+ if thats needed at all.

I thought it'd be ok, not sending it to Dundee then. Found a good guy in Surrey who hopefully will do the business.

Cheers for the replies chaps.
