I run my vintage Orange 120 Overdrive through a Marshall stereo 4x12, 300 watt cabinet. With one amp into the cabinet, I have the option of 4 or 8 ohms. I'm wondering if there's an advantage to using one or the other since I can switch ohms on the amp.

don't know anything about the cabinet.
If you plug into the 8 ohm input of the cab do you get 2 speakers or all 4? my guess is that 8 ohms gives you two and 4 ohms gives you all 4 speakers. in this case 4ohms with all 4 speakers is your best choice. just a guess though. I would try to find out through the dealer you bought it from or Marshall.

I get all four speakers either way. To split the cab, it goes to 16 ohms. I didn't do too well in physics, but I thought maybe the lower the ohms, the less the resistance, which might make the amp run cooler, change the tone or maybe even make it a little louder (like I need that).

You may be wrong here on the Marshall. It´s 4 or 16 ohms mono and 2x8 ohms in stereo. 4 ohms is said to get more punch but it´s up to taste here. Is the amp switchable 4-8-16? It´s either 4 or 16 to go with!

Whenever possible, you should always use a 16 ohm cabinet. The amp transformer is wired for 16 ohm using the entire transformer, then there are taps on the transformer using part of the tranny for 8 ohm and even less for 4 ohm. So, to use the entire winding of the transformer and the best possible tone, a 16 ohm cab is best. Billy
