I am thinking about buying an Orange AD30. I've played through the AD30 and am not sure if 30 watts will be enough. I'd be playing through an Orange PPC212 cabinet. Would the AD140 be a better choice if I use this cabinet?

Have you tried the 140? It doesn't really matter what cab you play through.
I think the 412 would be a better choice if you use this amp.
The AD30 is Class "A", and the AD140 is "AB".

I havn't tried the AD140 yet. Is the AD140 too much wattage for the 212 cabinet? would the AD30 sound better? Why would the 412 be a better choice?

The 212 has 2 Vintage 30's @ 60watts each totaling 120 watts maximum!
The 412 with 4 Vintage 30's will handle 240 watts. Pushes more air as well.
The AD30 sounds great at any volume level, while the 140 will sound better as it gets louder.

I heard that the AD140 is better for rock because it is class A/B. Is it bad to crank the AD30 on a regular basis? Will I run the chance of blowing the amp? If I decide to go with the AD140, I might run the chance of blowing the 212 cab?

I don't think it's bad to crank the AD30. I have both the channels on my AD30HTC on "10" when I play live through a 4x12. It's the perfect volume for a rock band. Class A/B is probably more traditional in the context of rock music, but it's all personal taste/playing style that matters.

I think you'd be OK with the AD140 through the PPC212 as long as you don't turn it all the way up. My guess is that amp will be at full gig volume at around "3" or so. I doubt you'd be pumping out enough power at that point to blow a 120 watt cab. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong. But if it was my eqipment, I'd do it.

Will the 412 cab sound better with the AD140 than the 212 cab? Thanks for your reply. I'm completely pumped about getting orange gear.

The AD30's tubes are always at 100%. It is always cranked, just peole turn it down on a regular basis.
As for blowing the amp. If you run the wrong impedance or something.

They will sound the same. People will say the 412 feels louder.
The 212 won't handle a cranked AD140. It's better for the AD30.

Thanks for your reply Meole, that really helped me out. You can even play with the master and gain cranked to 10 on the AD30? It will be running the same power as if you had it on say 4 or 5? If anyone has played on both the AD30 and the AD140, what are the differences in sound and feel besides the fact that one is class A and one is A/B? What are some pros and cons of each amp? Thanks.

A store ordered in a AD30HTC and an AD140TC for me and I'm going to check them out on Saturday and buy the one I like more. I'll let you know what I find to be the difference after I play them.

that's going to be a sweet setup! I have the same head with the 4x12 and I wish I had the 2x12 for some occasions. Good luck!

You need both, depending upon what you do. I both record and play live and the AD30TCH does NOT handle both jobs well. It sounds great for bedrooms and studios. It sucks for live especially outdoor venues. I plan on getting an AD140 for live shows, due to the limitations of the AD30. I appreciate all the kind words about how well the AD30 sounds on this forum; but, in my experience, it is not the end all, be all, do all amp. Bottom line, it depends upon what you do. Play in an intimate setting, AD30 rocks anything around. Play in the Coliseum, and the AD140 shines while the AD30 leaves you gasping for air.
