Most under-rated well know guitarist...
Moderator: bclaire
Pick the most under-rated guitarist you can think of. Pick someone well know, because of course there are millions of incredible guitarists that nobody has ever heard of.
I think I'd have to say, for me, the most under-rated well known guitarist is Angus Young. I realize that he is highly rated by some, but not as much as he should be. This guy takes a '68 SG and runs it straight into a Marshall with all the knobs on half way up. The only effects he uses are the knobs on his guitar! But check out the massive dynamic, tone, and all the great songs....amazing.

Hey Horlix,
Tommy is great He's still Australia's number one guitar stylist. He plays mostly Bluegrass/Blues, with some wild fingerstyling acoustic guitar. So far, he's Maton's only 'signature' guitarist (well, he has been for 15 years or so), with a special edition of the Maton Messiah.
He also does some mean rock stuff - if you can get a recording of a Tommy Emmanuel song 'Terra Firma', you'll be listening to some good stuff.
Also, there's a really neat song called 'The Conversation', which is basically Tommy and his brother Phil (also a talented guitarist) having a conversation as they, at the same time, trade sequentially crazy and crazier guitar licks, turning into a full blown song (while Tommy comments on the weather).

She led me out to the Bikini Atoll, right to the edge of the exclusion zone, and pointed to a dandelion growing in the ashes, like a joke for the living.

I would go for Johnny Ramone, nobody plays 5 minutes as he used to do (R.I.P).

I'd say Malcom Young. He's a great rhythm guitarist.
I also think Nils Lofgren is underrated. He's a damn good player. Listen to the acoustic version of "Keith don't go".
Then there is of course Tom Morello. He's my favorite guitar player of today. He plays stuff that are unbelievable IMO. For instance the guitarsolo on "Know your enemy". Even though Tom is accepted as a great guitarist I still find him underrated, once again my opinion.
