What are the main differences between them? I'd be running them through an Orange cab and want a sound like ATDI/The Mars Volta.
Thanks,
Chris
AD140TC vs. AD30TC

Hello Chris
well other than the blatantly obvious wattage difference. the class A and AB is also very important and I will get to that latter on. One of the most important factors that is being
over looked is the tube type or valve type. The AD30TC has EL84 output tubes and
the AD140TC uses EL34 output tubes. Tone wise there different beasts and there’s
the fact that the AD30TC has a tube rectifier and the AD140TC not stated by Orange
but I would assume it is solid state rectifier which will produce a tighter low end that
the tube rectified. How ever the AD30TC has a sweet sounding low end.
Class A and Class AB
In a Class A amp all power tubes conduct current all the time at or near maximum
whether or not a signal is presant. The audio flows seamlessly from one half to the other.
This creates a very smooth distortion and makes every note you play more defined
Class AB on tube is biased to turn on slightly before its opposite number cuts off this leaves a small amount of crossover distortion which is reduced with a negative feedback loop.
Class AB still has the fullness of Class A but has a harsher edge.
Hope this helps and let your ears be the judge

The AD30TC isn't underpowered actually- it's loud as a bastard- but if you were in a large band with two guitars, bass, keys, etc. you might find it getting lost onstage.
Now if you're talking about the 30 watt head through a 4X12, then that's a different story. My experience is with the combo- and I find with all combos that a good portion of the sound is going backwards as well as forwards and unless you raise the amp up, it's more difficult to hear than a 4X12 which has the top speakers higher up. 4X12's project forward- particularly Oranges- while combos are sorta surroundsound. Good for the drummer, though.
Hope this helps. Billy

oh.... wait. I didn't really answer the question.
Venue size also has a lot to do with what amp I feel like carrying <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
Smaller clubs I bring the combo but lately I haven't been using the 140 half stack except for really big clubs where the onstage sound tends to get lost. But in all of these cases, I have used the 30 watt combo there as well when what I felt like lifting was a consideration.
