Hello All,
This is my first time on the site. Anyway, I am getting really interested in the AD140 and the AD140TC heads. I am fortunate to own some high dollar Diezel and Marshall limited gear. I have also owned Bruno,VHT,Soldano,etc...
I have been "sort of" interested in the Orange stuff over the years, but never pursued it. Now, I am itching for some new sounds and I would like to hear from you in regards to these particular models.
ALL responses will be GREATLY appreciated!
I am really looking for the vintage rock sound. Not really into the
very "hard" stuff. If I get the itch, the Diezel will handle that.
My limited Marshalls are good too, but I am just looking for a change...
Thanks!

new oranges do not sound vintage. they have a modern sound to them but not overdone like mesa's. they sound good, but not vintage. an exception may be the "retro 50" head which is supposed to be closer in sound to the original orange heads. i would check into that one if you want a vintage sound. or just buy a vintage orange head...same price if not cheaper.

Geez, ecto, usually I agree with you on just about everything but not this.
Phil- I think you can make the AD140TC heads sound like just about any Orange- I think they sound Orange rather than modern. I love the sound of it and I can pretty much nail the sound of my '78 OR80M with it if I want. The thing just sounds really, really good.
I don't know if I'd call any Orange a vintage sound- they're their own unique sound. I've owned a lot of amps over the years- vintage Marshalls (plexi 50 watt trem, superleads, and now JTM-45's), and use a 6101 Marshall at times (now THAT'S a modern sounding amp although you can voice it to sound like any Marshall)- plus a slew of Fenders and others over the years. The Orange is such a unique sounding amp and so responsive to the player that I couldn't see using anything else. And now I have 4 Oranges: 2 OR80M's, AD140TC, and an AD30TC combo. Love 'em all...
The only amp I've played recently that I thought was a grea sound was a Matchless combo but it has ONE sound/ one channel and was ridiculous money.
Have you ever heard of Divided by 13 amps? They're supposed to be some top stuff and I don't think you can even get one unless you're "somebody." They're at: http://www.dividedby13.com/
Just imagine what they must cost.... Billy

oh and they'll make them in different colors, too. Like orange, for example. Kind of irritating in a way....

my response was based on the 30 min or less time i spent playing with an ad140tc at the local shop. in that 30 min, i heard nothing that struck me as vintage, and heard nothing that sounded anything like my or120. BUT, it was only 30 min, and since you own one, im sure you know WAY more about it than i learned/heard in 30 min. so, listen to billy, not me. Ive never even heard a retro 50 (although ive seen one) so my response regarding that amp was based on something ive read.
ive never heard an orange (other than the new ones) with a master volume, so maybe that is why the ad140tc sounded so different to me. i'm used to having to crank my amp to get any kind of breakup but the ad140tc did it without much effort. maybe late 70s orange overdrives like billy's are the same way, but i haven't heard one so i dont know.
sorry i disappointed you billy, i was out of my element on this particular question.

Hello All,
Thanks for the responses-much appreciated. Does anybody know if the AD140 Custom Shop model sounds any different than the
AD140TC? I don't even know if they are still available, but I like point to point wiring. However, if the AD140TC basically sounds the same as the single channel hand built one, then it might be a better deal.
Any comments/suggestions/input ALWAYS appreciated!
Thanks!

I get to see new Oranges sporadically. Eric, you're one up on me that you've actually SEEN a Retro 50.... I haven't seen that one or the AD140 so I can't compare the two 140 models...
I own an AD140Tc and AD30TC- and just recently played through an AD15 with a 12" Celestion that was a smokin' amp! Unfortunately (or fortunately considering the space I have) I don't have the $$$ to buy one at this time so it'll have to sit in the store. My friendly local Orange dealer (Rock City Guitars in Somerville MA- Hi Corey and Justin) also had a '57 Les Paul Junior that was unbelievable through the AD15. Yikes...

It sounds incredible. Can't give you a specific artist or song where I know for a fact that there's an AD140TC on it except for this mp3 excerpt from our upcoming CD:

check the topic "who else uses orange" on this forum.
And for a 140TC I for sure know that THE MARS VOLTA uses one or even two.
