3 Preamp Tubes VS 4 Preamp Tubes, What's missing?

Post by VergDan » Fri Feb 14, 2020 6:58 am

The Jim Root Terror is based on the Rockerverb and it has 3 preamp tubes.

The Rockerverb has 4 tubes.

But both these amps have 4 stages of gain, what does the missing 1 tube do?

Does this mean that the Jim Root terror might have some sort of solid state gain stage? For example the Micro Dark's first 2 gain stages are solid state and the tube is doing stages 3 and 4.

2 tubes make up the 4 stages (1/2 of a 12AX7 per stage, they're like two tubes in one). 1 tube for the effects loop, and on the Rockerverb a tube for the reverb circuit.

The Jim Root Terror uses a 12AT7 for the effect loop, and it uses 3 12AX7s, for 4 stages of gain.

Rockerverb on the other hand has 2 12AT7s, I think for effect loop and reverb? And 4 12AX7s for 4 stages of gain. That's where my confusion comes from.

The 12AT7’s are for effects loops and reverb circuits, 1 in the Root Terror, 2 in The Rockerverb. Each amp has a 12AX7 for the phase inverter, each amp has two 12AX7’s for the four stage gain channel and the Rockerverb has another 12AX7 for two stage clean channel.

Thank you!

What about the Rocker 15 Terror? It has 2 channels and 3 12AX7s, so 1 tube for the phase inverter, 1 tube for the clean channel and 1 tube for 2 stages of gain for the dirty channel?

The Natural channel uses 1/2 a 12AX7, it’s one stage. The Dirty channel uses the other 1/2 for the first stage and a second 12AX7 for the 2nd and 3rd stage (3 stage gain circuit). A 12AX7 for the P.I. And then theres the effects loop tube.
