Using The 7 Watt Side Of Terrors

Post by adkguy07 » Sat Feb 08, 2020 2:17 pm

I'm curious if any Terror owners (especially) and other Orange amp users who have the 7 watt
option actually find a good circumstance to use it. My Dark Terror does not sound quite as good on that setting when compared to the 15 watt mode. There seems to be a bit more headroom with 15 watts and just more girth to the tone. I use 7 watts only to get a bit quieter, although it is not really a “late night quiet”. When and where do you find that the 7 watt option is desirable for your use?

I never really liked it. Its not that much quieter so I always used the 15 watt mode even at low volume. Its more of a feel thing, it drops the voltage from the transformer resulting in a more compressed/spongier feel. Has its place, more useful if the amp is cranked.

Tiny Terror owner since around 2007?... picked up one of the 2nd run of korean ones after they moved the standby onto the 15/7 watt switch and before they moved the production to china.

Yeah, i'd agree with jondog in regards to the 'more compressed' comment. it's effect is certainly subtle, in regards to the compression, tonal changes, overall volume /headroom available etc.

i tend to just put it in 15 watt mode.

due to the logarithmic nature of an amps power on volume, to go twice as loud, you'd have to go 10 times the wattage, so 100 watts is only twice as loud as a 10watt amp, then you've got speaker efficiencies - back when i was taking note, orange were using celestion vintage 30's, which are quite efficient, which gave a little more volume than say marshall's G12t75's.

so again, more of a feel thing rather than significant volume reductions for driving it a lower levels.

i do also have a hayden Mofo which has a similar set up, but this is 30 watts with a 2 watt setting - that makes a real difference in headroom / volume.

I use mostly my Terror at home. I use it on the 7 watts mode, clean and quiet (I live in a appartment). I use a overdrive if I need some dirt.

Honestly, it's not the best way to use the TT, but I dont want to buy another amp, since it get the job done. The 15 watts setting sound better, even at moderate volume (but above the volume I play at home). I also have a Fender Vibro-Champ that I use more often.

I keep my TT not for home use, but because it's my backup amp. It's also nice to have a small amp when AD30 is too big and loud.

I have 4x Terrors; Rocker 15, Brent Hinds, Jim Root, & Dark Terror. I almost never use anything other than the 15W side on all of them. When jamming with my ole' buddies once or twice a month with volume upwards near 3o'clock to daily practicing at home at volumes lower around 7o'clock.
