Best Orange for good tone at low volumes?

Post by leeowensoas1 » Sun Oct 13, 2019 4:45 pm

Unlike the rock bands of the 60s, I'm in a constant battle to get QUIETER/silent. Does Orange put out anything that will sound better at low volumes than my RV100 MKIII with the attenuator? It's been more manageable than my tiny terror haha. Also how bout any good amp or cab sims for in ear monitors. I have amplitube orange on my pc, and I just picked up an HX Stomp (which looks like it only has an OR80), and I'd like to be able to get a silent stage setup

My Rocker 15 Terror has a 'Headroom/Bedroom' power scaling feature. Takes it from 15/7W down to 1/0.5W. I tried to A/B it with a Bad Cat Unleash attenuator and preferred the Bedroom setting, by far.

For a silent stage setup, I use a Two Notes Torpedo loadbox/cab simulator/DI box. I used it today with my Orange, IEM's and no cab. It has an analog cab sim and sounded great at rehearsal.

Perhaps an AD5 if you can find one?

Nope.
I'm probably gonna sell my AD5. My AD5 is my loudest amp from the point at which you get a sound from it. (Superb cleans though)

My AD15, R30, RV50 and Genz Benz Black Pearl 30 are all more house friendly.

From that clean point, the AD5 only gets louder if you want some dirt. It sounds glorious though!!!! 8)

Are you able to use this in a live capacity? (I.e. storing the orange amp/cab/mic models on the omec and setting it up on a pedalboard? How would one set this up?

Which torpedo do you use? Looking at the varieties on Sweetwater I can't super tell which one would be best

I don't think so. I believe you need something to run the software. It's basically a low latency interface in pedal format.

I have a Rocker 15 Combo and agree it sounds pretty amazing at low volume.

However I would say the dirty channel if it has enough gain definitely doesn't sound quite as good if the amp is set to 0.5W. As soon as you get to 1W it sounds amazing though. On 0.5W I might say the clean channel + a tube screamer sounds better than the amp's dirty channel. As soon as you get to 1W or higher though the dirty channel slays any Overdrive pedal I've tried.

But the caveat... and this is maybe a reason to think about the Rocker 15 Terror instead of the Combo... the Voice of the World Gold speakers in the Rocker 15/32 Combos are super efficient and are REALLY loud for a given wattage. The Rocker 15 will go > 90dB @ 2 meters out from the amp even on the 1W setting.

The Head + a cabinet with a less sensitive speaker might be a lot better for quiet playing. I bought mine before the Head came out so it wasn't an option for me.

Does your combo have a speaker out?

I would think you already have the best option in the RV. I’ve got an RV 50 and no other amp comes even close to quiet but amazing tone as that one. Stop looking elsewhere and trust your RV!

Agreed. The best practice amp I have is the RV MKIII because it is way easier to control volume wise. No matter what amp you choose, if it is tube based, it will suffer in some way when going quiet. The bedroom setting on the rocker amps is really cool but try one out before you buy because it isn't a setting I would ever say is that awesome tone I look for. It just happens to be quiet.

Yes it does. I'm not particularly interested in buying an external cabinet but that would be an option for taming the volume level. Of course you could just do a speaker swap to a less sensitive speaker too.
