7w/15w, what's the difference?

Can someone please lecture me on the wattage switch on orange amps?
I switched my Jim Root Terror from 7w to 15w, I heard a slight volume increase, more high end and a little more bottom end but I'm not entirely sure because I've only been able to play it in bedroom level.
What's the true purpose of this switch, volume? tone? easier power amp break up?

All of those.
That switch reduced the power sent to the power valves.
In turns, it affects the overall volume by reducing the power to 7w, the tone as the power valves are operating below their peak power, and the headroom- less watt, your reach the headroom limit earlier and then reach into power valve overdrive.

In tearm of perceived volume, there is not big diffence. At home, even in 7 watts, my TT is quite loud and a use a Boss FBM-1 (or a SD-1) with the volume lower to not bother the neighbors.

Some volume increase but more headroom and less compression - how much headroom is amp dependant.

Having owned a number of orange amps with this feature ...all sound best in full power mode.

Doubling the power from 7 to 15 watts will increase the volume +/- 3 db.
