Seventy 80/rocker 30.

Post by kpunk56 » Sat Aug 10, 2019 12:17 pm

Has anyone ever tried the seventy 80s with a rocker 30. I think you’d be surprised. I know those speakers no one has ever said a good thing about them. But I honestly feel like they were made for the rocker 30. I was at a gig that had a ton of bands (an all day event). The way the club was set up it was difficult to maneuver gear through so I had it pre arranged to borrow a cab from the band before us. The guy had a lower priced Marshall mx212 that had seventy 80s. Our time came for the rock and my god the rocker 30 came alive. Much more projection than it ever had and tone sounded great. I then found a blackstar open back 212 with seventy 80s super cheap. Compared it to a friends cab with greenbacks and I felt it sounded the same but had more throw. I had a orange 212 with v30 that I thought sounded terrible. I was just wondering if anyone had experience because I know those celestions get a bad rap. I just find it efficient and tone is great for my r30. It seems like they were made for one another.

My experience with the 70/80 is mixed. Love the cleans, but I find it a bit undefined with dirt.

V30s take for ever the break in and can be quite harsh until then. Once fully broken in though..... I find them very sweet, full and thick sounding, with excellent articulation even with heavy gain.

But at the end of the day, what works for me is irrelevant, if you like thw 70/80, good for you. I didn't get to try it with my R30 mind you.

I had 2 Blackstar cabs with the 70/80s in them, they were just acceptable with my 5x Orange Terrors but nothing to write home about. They sounded a bit linear & sterile, compared to my Vintage 30s & 70th Anniversary. I will say that even though the 70/80 did not do it for me with these all tube amps, they did sound very impressive before I went to all tube amp heads, when I had solid state rack mounted power amps with digital preamps. I've even heard a few modeling amps played thru them with nice results. But for my all tube Orange Terrors they lacked a certain something and I could not justify keeping them.

I will admit I probably didn’t give the v30 cab time to break in.

Id completely agree with what's been said of the 70/80s , ok but nothing to write home about , having said that if they were well broken in and the V30s were not, I'm not surprised they sounded better. I like V30s and have used them for years but when not broken in that are harsh and sterile...

If they work for you then great!

Actually I would say that the seventy 80's in this blackstar are not really broken in because the cab is brand new. I have had at home play with it but not really cranked gig levels.
