New To Orange/Need Advice

Post by ViridtyBand » Wed Mar 13, 2019 6:10 pm

Hello all,

I just bought my first tube amp, it’s an Orange Tiny Terror paired with an Orange PPC212CB. I’m looking to find some settings that can provide me a modern pop punk tone (not like Blink-182/Green Day) but more like bands; such as, Knuckle Puck and Neck Deep. As far as guitar goes, I have an Epiphone LP Custom. If I can get any help as to how I should set the volume (for backyard shows), tone, and gain that would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Welcome to the forum!

The real answer is, you have to find these things out for yourself. Experiment with settings, try different things out in rehearsal, but know that as soon as you get outdoors, everything changes. When you are in a small room (rehearsal), a gig indoors (bigger room), and then outdoors (no reflective surfaces) you will have to change settings and get used to the sound of a different location.

Thanks for the welcome!

I understand that a lot is independent of me, but I wanted to know if there’s a place where I can start. As I’m deaf in the left ear and partly on the right, also I’m the only guitarist in my band so they’re not really knowledgeable of how it’s supposed to sound because we’re all still pretty young (18-20)

1) great cab choice, well done.

2) amp settings are all going to come down to preference, I'd probably suggest working on the half-power setting and running as much volume as possible, and relatively less gain. And keep the shape closer to the middle than you might think...

3) if you haven't upgraded the wiring on your Epiphone, that would be a great investment too. It really is the "worst" thing about those guitars, and the ability to more dynamically adjust the volume/tone coming off the guitar will go a long way to making the pair play nice. I say that because...

4) My experience is that higher-output humbuckers don't play as well with the higher-gain Oranges (I had a Epi Custom for several years, it never played well with the Thunderverb, loved the AD30 though... same story with my Firebird Studio T).

I don't know these bands, but the tiny terror is dead simple to use.

The tone control bleeds treble progressively as you roll it back.

You'll just need to experiment with that until you find a tone you like or that fits the music you're trying to emulate. You're unlikely to nail their tones, so just enjoy a tone that works well. The tiny terror is a great little amp, you should find something that sounds great.

As for gain..... try to play with the volume as high as you can, rather than the gain. You will get better tone and articulation that way.

As stated before, you need to experiment on your own. There are only three controls, so it should not be that hard to dial desired tone.

I also own TT and PPC212 CB, so here are few suggestions how I dial a good tone

-start with tone control at noon, it is kind of "neutral" EQ position
-first try to open the power amp section (volume) for good crunch
-then adjust the gain in the preamp to get a nice, saturated distortion
-last, but not least, mess with the EQ; personally I like to set it around 10:00 on single coils and 2:00 on humbuckers

Also, TT responds very well to any boosts pedals. Classic Tubescreamer Circuit (for example Maxon OD-9) will give you definately more grit and punch. Electro Harmonix LPB-1 is also great (and cheap!) booster, but I find it a bit bassy so you might mess with EQ again.

All in all, have fun, you have a killer setup!

Thank you for the response, I really like the sound of the amp when the volume is around 8:00 (on the clock-low volume I know), tone at 2:00, and gain at around noon, can you help me getting a similar sound at a louder volume? Considering you have the same rig, thanks a bunch all

It really depends on where you set the volume. Up to 12 o'clock, I'd expect everyrhing to stay pretty much the same. Beyond that, the EL84 should start to gradually overdrive. The more you push them, the more overdrive they give.... and so you may need less gain... and the more they overdrive, the more they will produce harmonics, adding to the treble content. You may, or may not, wish to compensate for that buy rolling the tone control back a touch. But you may like it just fine!!!!
