Presence control on a rack pre-amp???

Post by newyorkmetal77 » Mon Oct 08, 2018 9:07 pm

I hate doing this because it's not a directly Orange related topic, I don't even know if Orange has even ever made "rack" gear, but this question has been bothering me. I've always seen presence controls described as being associated with the POWER amp section of a guitar rig. However, I picked up an old Hafler T2 rackmount tube PRE-amp (early 90's competition to Peavey's RockMaster rack pre-amp) and it's B channel has a "PRESENCE" control on it. I also just noticed that the aforementioned RockMaster pre has a presence control on it as well. What's the deal? Thanks!

Not familiar with it so I’d need a schematic to see what its doing in the circuit. Typically a presence knob is affecting the negative feedback from the output back to the phase inverter on the power amp, but presence is just a name and I’ve seen it used in circuits that have a tone control for brightness labled presence.

I have a feeling it's not a traditional presence control but something similar that they're calling presence.

Carvin Tube 100 power amp have also a presence dial on each channel. It add some brightness.
So, maybe not the same effect on your device.

Probably just an eq that approximates the same range as a traditional presence control....
