Or80 vs or120

Post by steamboat » Mon Sep 03, 2018 4:08 pm

For those who have played or owned both the or80 and or120, besides volume, are there any differences noticed?

Would I be missing out on anything by getting an or80 vs a or120?

I'm just curious if anyone's feels you lose any orange mojo between the two amps, if one version tends to be better?

Thanks

All things being equal, they are the same amp. The only difference is that the 120 has 2 extra tube sockets in it. You can easily make an OR-80 into a 120 by adding 2 sockets and the corresponding grid resistors. You can make a 120 into an 80 by pulling 2 tubes out of it.

There are some outlier OR-80's that did have different (smaller) transformers in the early 70's. But for the most part, throughout production, they were the same amp plus or minus 2 tube sockets.

Thanks for the reply, yeah I always knew you could do that with the tubes adding two to an or80 or subtracting two from the or120...just didn't know if anyone ever felt that the or120 just sounded better having a larger power section...I like the idea of the or80 as I do not need a lot of volume.

Having 4 power tubes does have more grunt, more low end, more volume, more headroom. But the OR-80 isn't lacking in any of those departments. The 120 just kicks those attributes up a notch or 2.

Even the OR-80 is already viciously loud though. The 120 is just crazy.
