I'm in the market for a new amp.

I've previously owned marshalls and oranges, I'm downsizing from a Jcm800.
I've owned a couple of tiny terror hardwired, a rocker 30, a retro 50 and a rockerverb.

I'm looking for something pretty portable, I don;t need a clean channel; but I do need crunch that can do classic rock through to 80's thrash/hot rodded jcm800 with a pedal in front type of sounds. The facility for a lead boost would be great too, either through fx loop or a 2nd channel.

The terrors would be great if they're loud enough, I loved mine and they're nice simple portable amps, but I'm open to suggestions!!

AD30HTC or a Dual Terror would probably nail it for you.

I'd considered trying a dual terror (I toured the states with one last year , I've always liked the terrors) but never thoight of the ad30, I always assumed it'd be too vintagey and saggy with it being valve rectified, maybe I should try one!!

Did u get rid of the R30 head, I take it is was nt for you?

I did!! It was a great sounding and well made head, just seemed to be voiced a bit much in the lower mids and a little too compressed for me

Too compressed?
You must have run it super hard/loud to get natural valve compression?

Otherwise, AD30, R30, Dual Terror or OR50 are your main bets.

Any one of mine; the Dark Terror, Jim Root Terror, Rocker 15 Terror, & Brent Hinds Terror will do as well as Vintage 70s Rock.

If you had to pick one, which would you choose??!

I guess I would choose the Jim Root Terror if I had to keep just one.

I would actually agree with this a little. I picked up an AD30 and it is really really cool however, you need to either push the power section a lot or use a pedal if you plan on anything with 80's gain. As far as the saggy stuff, I have found it really depends on your eq settings. Channel 2 with bass held back a bit doesn't sound saggy at all to me but channel 1 if you get the bass too high will sag. I love the sound of channel 1 and it works awesome for some more classic stuff. The Dark Terror or the Jim Root would be great since they have an FX loop. The Rocker terror would also be a good candidate.

I would check out YouTube demos of the TH30. Seems to have a super wide gain range ending up in full on high gain saturation and filth which I would think you could EQ to an 80's style voice and the classic rock crunch would likely be extremely easy to dial in as it seems to be one of the most commonly available tones to dial into almost every Orange there is.

Some of the higher gain settings in the demo's I've seen get a great Sabbath-y Vol. 4 type of gain warmth and hotness. I have to believe that the 80's sound is achievable but that all depends on exactly which style of 80's you're looking for.

I generally think of all Orange amps as having that strong resonance in the low mid range almost always present. I've come to associate it as one of the hallmarks of the Orange voice.

If you thought the R30 felt too compressed, definitely don't get a TH30.
