Which Volume Pedal for Rockerverb MK1?

Post by mici88 » Mon Jul 23, 2018 8:04 pm

Long story short: I'm going to buy a volume pedal for my RV 50w MK1. I know some users report impedance issues with its fx loop and it is very likely I'll place vp at the very beginning of the loop.

Which version should I get? Low impedance? High impedance? I'm considering the most some of the Dunlop stuff, maybe Volume X or DVP-1.

Volume pedals go into the front of the amp.

Would you care to elaborate on that? Putting VP in FX loop is quite common practice - works as a master volume control I guess?

I had never heard of it before but I guess it will work.
Go here and read - scroll down for effects loop operation:

and Mission Electronics weighs in on different impedance values for effects loops:

OK, little follow-up.

I got Ernie Ball VP JR (25 kOhm version) and tested some combination in MK1's fx loop:

1) VP > Boss CH-1 > MXR Carbon Copy ----> Volume drop, not dramatic, but really noticeable
2) Boss CH-1 > VP > MXR Carbon Copy ----> No volume drop, no tone suck
3) Only VP ----> Volume drop

So it seems that it's good thing to put a buffer in front of it.

Putting a volume pedal in front of the amp works similarly to using your guitar's volume knob. Turning it down cleans up the amp's distortion, and has no effect on preamp noise.

Putting the volume pedal in the loop lets you keep the preamp gain/distortion the same as you raise/lower the volume. And it cuts down preamp noise when you lower the volume with the pedal -- sort of like a manual noise gate.

Loop or in front of amp -- both are effective methods, it just depends on what you're trying to achieve.

Some people even use two or more volume pedals in different parts of the signal chain.
