PPC212 or 2 x PPC112

Post by 11tonylevin » Sun Jun 17, 2018 1:34 pm

Hi
I just ordered a PPC212 cab to go with my 50 W Thunderverb head. Love the cab. However, I am no spring chicken any longer and hauling the 2x12 is a chore, especially with no handle on top. Need 2 people to avoid banging it around. So, I was thinking of replacing it with 2 cabs PPC112. Do you see any reason to believe that this option would be inferior to the 2 v30s being in the same cab? Appreciate your input, especially if you have used the 1x12 cab
thanks
tony

PPC212 > 2x PPC112.

I had the same dilemma long time ago, after some tests I've decided to go with 212. More low end, more punch, more air movement, and just sound bigger and better in general.

Come on, it's not that big and heavy, I can easily carry it alone.

Easy answer... buy the 212 open back, sounds superb!

OK I'm assuming you bought the closed back!! A single person can lift the open back OK?

A single person can lift a 4x12, too. Did it for years.... two of them, too.

The PPC212 is movable, but it's an awkward lift. Great sounding cab.

thanks to everyone who chimed in. My question was really more around the sonic quality of 2 speakers in one cab vs 1 speaker/cab x 2 cabs. In the end if the sonic changes are minimal, why not haul 2 smaller cabs? I agree that the 2x12 is not impossible to carry, its just awkward for one person to manage.

The sonic difference is pretty big.

The PPC212 sounds much bigger, fuller, and has more low end.
The open back sounds bigger and fuller too, but hasn't got the same low end punch. It isn t a negative, just different. Being open back, the sound really fills small/medium venues better.

Before I got my PP212 I had a Blackstar 112 and a peavey 112. Sound wasn't as rich as a 212 and I know the blackbird and whatever was in that Peavy weren't v30s. However, there's a sound difference between a larger cab and a smaller cab, the speakers don't move as much with the larger cab and of course, it simply moves more air.

I wanted to chime in about moving 412’s as well. They are movable by one person for sure but they are pretty annoying to move. Part of the reason I moved them alone was so I could tell my friends about it in the forums so this seemed right up my alley.

Side note, it never hurt my back but my thighs would burn when it came to the second 412 going down stairs.

One 2x12 vs two 1x12's depends on the cabs you're comparing.

I've never played through any Orange cabs. But from what I've read, while the 212's and 412's are world-class great cabs, the PPC112 is a little boxy sounding and not a first-rate cab (very good, but not the best 112). Just about everyone who's tried a pair of them say they don't sound as good as a 212.

From my personal experience, two Bogner Cube 112's sound as good or better than any 212. In fact, as good or better than any 412.

I really like TL806 ("Thiele") 112's too. Some people aren't as fond of them as I am. But two of those sound absolutely massive. (While designed for EVM12L speakers, I've found they work very well with V30's and G12-65's.)

For non-ported 112's, whether closed-back or open-back, large "over-sized" 112's sound much better than compact 112's. For me, the minimum size is about the size of a Fender Deluxe Reverb.
---------------------
The PPC112 isn't a tiny cab. I'm not entirely sure why its reputation suggests it doesn't sound as great as it should. But in a cab, a lot of design choices interact to create the sound.
---------------------------
There's an appeal to matching cosmetics. And Cubes and TL806's are much narrower than your head. You'd have to put them side by side. Avatar makes Orange-ish styled 112's that get good reviews (though I've never heard them).
----------------------
Other approaches to consider.

Carts, handtrucks, dolly's.

You could add a top handle to the PPC212.

If you have a facility to cut a piece of plywood to size, I've heard that swapping the PPC112 to an open back panel really improves their sound.

Billy's the hulk. hauling 2 412 boxes around. geeze

I did 212/412 for a little while. then 212. I really, really, REALLY, like the closed back PPC212 cab.
