Help choose my next amp !

Post by pattyzero » Tue Apr 03, 2018 10:22 pm

Hi guys I'm in the market for a new amp, please help me decide !!

I'm a 44 year old guitar player , done my fair share of recording and touring , just looking for a new amp that'll fit the bill.

I've played most things , my 2 favourite amps ever are the Marshall jcm800 2203 and the orange tiny terror hard wired .

I'm looking for something portable , practical size for gigs so I can get the amp singing properly , it needs a solo boost (I play in 2 dual guitar bands ) and it needs to be great quality.

The jcm800 is too big , too loud , and has no solo boost .
The tt15hw is not always loud enough , and has no solo boost.

Any ideas ?? I don't really need a clean sound , just different levels of dirt , I play 70's Rock, nwobhm, punk, crossover etc. I play in a crossover punk/thrash band(slayer, discharge) , a garage rock band(hellacopters, dictators) and a nwobhm style band .

Any ideas ??!

I’d say a Dual Dark 50. Two dirty channels that can clean up okay and a footswitchable attenuator for your boost. Won’t be portable like a Tiny Terror, but a bit smaller than a JCM800.

I'm thinking the Orange TH30, or look at the new Marshall DSL and Origin lines.

They're aren't many amps with solo/gain/volume boosts on the market.

I've got one in the Genz Benz Black Pearl 30, but I reckon that amp wouldn't be near dirty enough for you.

Otherwise, the Orange R30 might d9 it with a additional boost pedal, or the AD30 - Since you can set up both channels dirty, one of them can be used as a dirtier/ heavier gain and volume. Different channel voicing.

In any case..... 3 people have commented, and you already have 5 to 8 different propositions.......

Yep, another vote for the Dual Dark 50 from me! I like the clean and dirty sounds equally to be honest.

Dual Terror! Should be able to find one second hand and save a bunch.

Dual Dark 50 is pretty hard to beat for flexibility.

Might want to look into a Friedman Runt 20. Nails the JCM tones, has a boost, and a really underrated clean tone.

I had a TTHW. Loved it. Long story short: now I have a Rocker 15 combo. Love it too. Put an Orange Two Stroke pedal in the loop and there's your boost. Just another option...
