Orange OR100h tube swap for vintage tone

Post by sa1126 » Tue Mar 27, 2018 1:52 am

I swear I read somewhere that someone did a preamp tube swap on their or100 and it gave it a much more vintage tone. Does anyone know the details on this?

I thought it sounded pretty vintagey already?

Looking at your amp list in your sig, where would you rate it and place it on the modern scale?
Before/after the R30/ AD30?

As to your question, sorry, I have no idea.

What did you want to achieve? Reduce overall gain?

I would say it is the most modern of all of my collection, maybe with the rocker 30 not far behind. I actually found the tube swap info on thegearpage -- evidently if you put a 12ay7 in P1 it will open up the amp quite a bit. It is hard to explain but it is just very smooth sounding, doesn't have the gritty gain like the ad's and or. I'll give it a go and report back.

Do you have a link to the thread? Couldn't find it.

Here you go:

Thx! Does the P1 control both channels? What do you mean by "open up" exactly?

“Open up” in this context, just means “decrease gain.” 12AY7 is just a lower gain triode than the 12AX7. If it gives you more range on the volume control before breakup, and makes you happier, then it’s the magic bullet.
