74' 4x12 Price

Post by Gummo » Sat Mar 17, 2018 4:55 pm

Hey all, I'm new around here, so hi. I bought a 73' OR120 a few months back. It's awesome of course. Now a guy in my area is selling a 74' 4x12 for $1200. It has 3 74' Eminence speakers and one from the 80's. What do you think it is worth? Have any of you heard these speakers? What do they sound like? Thanks!

I don’t see much point in buying a vintage Orange 4x12, especially when you can get a newer one used with Celestions in it for 1/2 that price. $1200 is STEEP for a 4x12, but I don’t really have a good reference point on the vintage cabs. If it was a 6x12 from the 70s, okay, $1200 all the way.

In the UK those vintage cab sell for around £400 To £500.

So $1200 seems extremely high, but I don't have a relative reference point.

Best thing is to see what's on offer / sold on ebay and reverb.

That's a lot of money for that cab. It would have to be mint condition to warrant that price.

I understand why you'd want the vintage cab but really, the new ones are the better value and sound.

Thanks for the input! I had a feeling that it was way overpriced, but I was looking for an excuse to buy it anyway :D

On a related point, I have a PPC4x12. The guy I got it from said he thought it was from the 90's. The vintage 30's in it are from 2006. The only weird thing about it is the input jack plate is just black plastic, no insignia, decals, etc. Any way to tell what year this thing was made? It doesn't really matter, but I'm curious.

Without a serial number plate, you can only go by the speaker dates.

I used to have an early 70's 4x12. It was beat to hell, with the tolex falling off it. Heavy road wear. I loaded it with V30's from the early 2000's. It had no serial plate on it, and had spray paint on the back from the previous owner. I sold it for $1000 to a gentleman who gladly drove a 12 hour round trip to pick it up, and was very happy with the purchase.

People pay very high prices for vintage gear these days. I don't doubt that someone will buy that cab for $1200. But personally, I would not be that guy.
