Got my 120!

Post by Dexter211275 » Wed Mar 07, 2018 7:29 am

120 watt Peavey 6505+ that is :P I have been in the market for a big amp for awhile now and was really hoping Orange was going to re-issue the OR120 or something major for thier 50th anniversary, but it looks like all we are getting is even more 15 watt amps which are pretty useless for my needs and I got tired of waiting. Sold my Rockerveb 50 MKI but still love my Orange 2x12 though!

Nice. I sold my original 5150 years ago since I don't gig with a band anymore but, man, do I miss it. Nothing moves air like watts.

Yea, they are insanely loud but great. Just took it to rehearsal for the first time tonight. Sounds killer with the Orange cab! Honestly, its too much for rehearsals and most gigs we will play. I had it right around 3 tonight and it overpowered our lead guitarist's AC30 too much and was about on par with our pretty loud drummer and our bass player who runs a GK 700RB-II with 2x10s and 2x15s. Way too much for a 26x18 rehearsal space, we need to downsize rehearsal gear though haha. Im getting the 20 watt 6505mh, lead guitar is bringing his AC15 and bass is going down to just the 2x10s.

Just order it!
I play in a hard rock/metal band. Have got some really awesome tones with this thing and all the volume you'll need. There's a reason why this is the industry standard in Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. Don't listen to the critics who say there's no good clean tone from this amp either. With the separate EQ for both channels and the included footswitch, you can find the tones you want (clean, crunchy, and screaming gain) and switch seamlessly back and forth. This thing is totally worth the money and the personal touch from the amazing folks at Sweetwater make the deal that much sweeter

Yea, thats the problem, its got TOO MUCH volume! It doesn't really come alive until 3 on the volume knob and I prefer it on 4. At that volume, you are burying the rest of your band and the vocals and there isn't a sound guy around that will let you play anywhere close to that volume in small to medium (or even large) sized bars. I ran a decibel meter at the last rehearsal and we averaged 113db and peaked at 122db which is insanely loud, especially in a 17x26 442 square foot rehearsal space. Below 3 its a very uninspiring tone, cold and anemic. The 20 watt mini version of it is awesome though. Retains all the sound of its big brother but you can crank it up good and still not blow everyone away. Im thinking about pulling two of the power tubes or getting an attenuator but the mini is a lot of fun.
