Orange OR50 Hiss

Post by daveydoom » Thu Feb 15, 2018 12:36 am

Hi guys brand new to the orange club, just got an orange or 50 and I love it!!! Got an orange open 2x12 back to match it too!!! Just one question though, when I have the gain knob around 1 o click and beyond it gets pretty hissy!!! Is there any way to get rid of this? Is it just the nature of the amp? Maybe swap out some preamp tubes or is there a mod for this? Thanks again for any help!!!

Hmmmm, better send it to me, I’ll beed to check it out first hand.

Or, you could try some preamp tubes. Any amp will hiss as gain is added, depends how bad it is whether its the tubes fault or not. Could be electrical interference too.

Thanks for the reply... I might swap out a less gainy preamp tube, don’t know yet

I haven’t messed with an OR50 at band volume but if the orange amps I have used at band volume, I have never had any noticeable noise floor, always dead quiet.

I would expect the or50 to behave that way when properly tuned but I could be wrong.

I should add, I use mine with potted passive humbucker a (typically 8-10k output)

Classic symptoms of a bad preamp valve.

They can hiss pretty badly as they get microphonic. You don't even need to get a lower gain valve, just replace it with a good valve.

Thanks man I might just do that, look into getting really good preamp tubes and swapping them out

Do it one at a time - that way, when you find the bad one, you can isolate the issue and discars that valve.

Whilst waiting for new valves....

You could always try swapping the 1st preamp valve (the likely suspect as you get bad microphony with the gain 1/2 way up) with the phase inverter valve. Not sure which is which, but a slightly microphonic valve is often silent in the Phase Inverter position. If that works, you'll know exactly where you stand.

V1 (1st preamp valve) is usually nearest to the guitar input.
