The new vertical 2x12 is interesting and quite different than any other Orange cab. Very interested to hear one. The response is probably going to be totally different than the PPC212, PPC212OB and the #4 (PPC212OB dimensions with closed back, VOTW speakers). I’ve heard good things about those NEO celestion speaker in the new cab. Also has an open back and uses 1/2” plywood instead of 3/4”. Not only makes it lighter but maybe more resonant? I always felt Orange cabs had a tight sound to them that was acoustically dead (in a good way, unlike a cajon drum). Would love to hear one being pushed compared to the PPC212.

Re: PPC212V
Is it really going to sound that much different from a 212OB turned on its side? I think the thinner material will have more of an effect than anything else.
Re: PPC212V
iirc the creambacks have a much smoother mids, sounding more "polite" and "compressed" to me vs the v30, so i expect a dramatic difference to the 212OB sound.. with the ply?.. with an OB construction i suspect the thinner ply wont make quite as much sonic difference as it would in a CB construction..

Haha I have ironically been experimenting with different speakers in the cb212s lately. I have some stuff coming with those... creamback are part of itMystic38 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 31, 2018 1:47 pmiirc the creambacks have a much smoother mids, sounding more "polite" and "compressed" to me vs the v30, so i expect a dramatic difference to the 212OB sound.. with the ply?.. with an OB construction i suspect the thinner ply wont make quite as much sonic difference as it would in a CB construction..

Re: PPC212V
A friend of mine who went to NAMM told me they sound considerably different to the current 2x12s. He said they sound more "open". His big gripe with the current 2x12 is that to him they sound "muffled", like a blanket over the amp. Its an open (semi closed back) cab with different speakers and slightly thinner construction, they will indeed sound different. I was thinking about getting one but laying it on its side on top of my 2x12
Re: PPC212V
Thats what I was thnking. I’ve never built a cab using 1/2”, but I have experimented with different thicknesses of baffles and the results are different.
Re: PPC212V
I would personally be surprised if the effect was discernable in a blind test with the same amp and the same speakers loaded in both cabs. I'm not saying construction doesn't matter, but we're talking about 15mm vs. 18mm with the same type of wood.
I guess i'll find out, should have a chance to play through one in a few months.

Re: PPC212V
Its not just the construction, which does play a part. Its also the open back as opposed to closed back. That alone makes a huge difference in tone let alone the different speakers.

Orange has an open back 2x12, that's why I said "212OB."Dexter211275 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 31, 2018 8:42 pmIts not just the construction, which does play a part. Its also the open back as opposed to closed back. That alone makes a huge difference in tone let alone the different speakers.
Re: PPC212V
I was considering the new 212V when I bought my AD30HTC last month:
- Extra height = better projection
- Reduced weight
- I prefer Greenback style speakers over V30s
Now, obviously the Neo Creambacks might not be exactly like Greenbacks but the thing that stopped me was it’s not wide enough for a full Orange head: it’s 0.5cm narrower! That seems foolish ... sure, a couple of cm wider would probably increase the weight a little but, as it stands, it only really looks right with a Terror head or an OR15. I guess they didn’t want to eat into 4x12 sales?
Anyway, I went for the PPC212OB: wide enough for a full size Orange head and not too bad weight wise. I may yet put some Greenbacks in it and shave a couple of kg off.
