Orange OD120 Overdrive - too quiet

Post by Hagstroem » Fri Dec 15, 2017 2:42 pm

Hey guys, I've got a question. I'm playing an OD120 and recently paired it with an JCM800 50 Watts from 1989. And that thing was loud! I got to 1 on the master, gain on 1 o'clock. The Orange was on 3 o'clock (!) at the same volume. Is there something wrong with my Orange? That thing has 120 Watts! And the Marshall is a lot more punchier. Or is that just the way the OD120 is? If I turn the master completely to the left the amp is much louder but really clean. PS: I'm not new to the Orange, I'm playing it for nearly 20 years. But never compared it to a JCM800.

The master volume on the Orange is completely different from the JCM800, the Marshall comes on very early. The OR-120 is the opposite. All of the volume and all of the proper sound comes in the last 2 notches or so on the master. The amp will not sound like it should, nor have the volume it should until the master is on at *least* 8 or 9. I'd go so far as to say they sound pretty bad with the master below 8.

Also take note that the knobs on these amps may not be clocked perfectly, meaning the knob may indicate that the amp is up all the way, but there's still some rotation left in it.

In short, turn the master volume knob up all the way (until you physically feel it stop rotating)...if the OR-120 doesn't flatten your 2204, let us know.
