RV50 MkIII vs RV100 MkIII at 50w

Post by PabloAndromeda » Tue Nov 07, 2017 5:30 pm

Greetings everyone! :)
I'm new to this forum and new to Orange amps as well!

I've been searching for a new amp for few months now and I'm close to pull the trigger on a RV50 MkIII (I really love the sound from this amp), but unfortunately I don't have access to the RV100 MkIII model in my area, hence this post.
Since the price difference between both models isn't ludicrously high, I'd like to know from the people who played both (or lucky enough to own/owned both):
Can I get the RV50 MkIII sounds from a RV100 MkIII switched down to 50w? How similar do they sound?
As I mentioned before I really love the sound from the RV50 and if I can get the extra clean headroom and bottom end from the a 100w, it would be an added bonus.

Cheers!

I suspect the RV100 at 50W would be exactly like the RV50.. except , well, not..

Tonally it would be identical, with the same headroom as the pre-amp is identical and you would be using 2 output tubes with the same rail voltage, however the difference is that the RV100 has a much beefier power supply, capable of supplying more current so transients and bass oomph would be better defined and projected with the RV100 @ 50 than the RV50.

Nope, while i do have 50W & 100W heads of the Vintage Modern, I have not done any tests on the RV, but i did sleep at a holiday inn express last night.

Mystic38 is right. After messing with 100 vs 50 watt heads of the same make, it makes a surprising difference. The 100 watt will have more low end to it which to me has translated to a little darker tone unless pushed. The clean doesn't really open up until you get the amp to band volume and then it seems to get more shimmer and glass to it. I haven't used a 50 watt at band volume before but at comfortable playing levels, it is pretty apparent.

I love my 100 watt head but if I did it all over, i would probably opt for the 50. Less weight to carry around too.

Hey! 8)

Thanks for the replies, both pointed out what I suspected. I really appreciated the input (pun intended)!

Well...
Realistically, a 100 watter would be too much for my needs, even if it has an attenuator. We play mainly in small clubs and ballroom sized venues, so I think a 100w would be overkill (and, as mentioned, the extra weight).

I'm leaning heavily toward the RV50, but I'll have the chance to test drive a friend of a friend's RV100 in a few days. I'll wait till then and make my decision with a clean conscience.

I'll post some pictures as soon as I make up my mind and I get my new Orange amp.

Cheers!
