Power amp advice for a PPC212

Hey guys, I need some advice when it comes to buying a power amp to match my cab. Its an Orange PPC212 2 x 12 / 120w / 16 ohms. I am also using POD HD Pro for my modeling.

I was previously using a matrix GT1000fx power amp but that has recently malfunctioned so I'm looking for a cheaper back up. I've tried doing research on it but there seems to be a lot of different opinions and none of them hit the mark. Is the cab classed as 16 ohms or 8 ohms because there's two speakers? What amount of wattage should I be loading into it? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you for any help.

Budget?

The PortCity pearl is supposed to be one of the best out there. Could also convert the 212 to a stereo cab and try the Mesa Stereo Fifty.

Another option is just to run a high wattage clean head. Like a JC120 head, 100 watt bassman, or twin.

At the moment my budget is around £200/$265/€225!

No clue then. I spent a year looking for a clean poweramp around that price for my Port City 212 cab. Ended up with a separate bass rig for my clean tone.

With your budget, I'll try to find a working CARVIN Tube 100 or something from that area, cheap and well built. I still have one

Perhaps the SD powerstage 170?

You answered your own question - the cab is rated at 120 watts and 16 ohm. That means there are two 8 ohm spaeakers in there wired to a 16 ohm load.

If you are used to getting a sound with the POD then any power amp is going to work because the coloration of your sound is in the POD. Get a cheap PA power amp - a Crown, a Seismic Audio, etc. Typically they are rated at 4 or 8 ohms but you could safely run one into a 16 ohm cabinet and the wattage will be reduced protecting the speakers. My two cents....
