using a 2x12 combo with different head.

Post by jc83 » Wed Sep 06, 2017 2:15 am

I have a cr120 combo amp. I am thinking about getting a rockerverb 100 mkIII. I was wandering if it would be ok to use the combo amp as just a 2x12 cab and plug the rockerverb into it? I would disconnect the cr120 head of course.

Just double check the impedance of the speakers so you can plug into the correct output on the amp.

The biggest issue when anyone tries to do this is, is the cord to the speakers long enough to reach an external head?

You would have to be careful with volume. The RV puts out way more than 100 watts at higher volume. As long as you aren't cranking it you should be fine.

Yes, could use the 50w or 70w setting on the mklll as well to be safe.

You just need a female to female 1/4 adapter and a speaker cable.

Alternatively, I made a "junction box" that I have secured in each of my combos. It's basically a plastic box with 2 jacks on it. I plug the speaker lead into one, and a speaker cable (from a head) into the other. I like that it's cleaner and ensures the wires don't contact the speakers.

I keep an EH 44 magnum in my cable box as a backup amp. If my AD30 goes down, I use the 44 magnum and junction box to make the combo into a head/cab backup rig.
