Svetlana Valves.

Post by Halogallo » Tue Sep 05, 2017 12:19 pm

Hi guys...
I´m replacing my 90´s reissue 120 OD tubes. My tech told me that one valve is kind of dying.
Cant remenber exactly when i bought them. A few years ago. 4 original Svetlana Winged C. I did a lot of research then to buy the best for my sound.
I was wandering if its worth to repair the broken one or give a try to another similar sound/brand cause i´ve playing and recording with this sound for many years.

thanks
Leo

If its the sound you like I'd say stick with it. I'd replace them all rather than just the one.

Winged C are probably the most robust valves you can get but they are expensive

I use JJ el34's now and they are pretty good to my ears anyway.

Watford valves in the UK stock them

You should still be able to find some, but probably 3 or 4 times the price you'd have paid for them whilst they were current production.

Yup this. I had winged C in my Rockerverb and really like but when it was time for swap out (3-4 months ago), there was no way I could justify the 3x price increase. Went with Tung Sol EL34b and didn't really notice a change for better or worst. YMMV

SED ("Winged C") tubes were great, but they're out of production now and supposedly some of the stock that's being sold as new were factory seconds. They're pretty expensive now, which doesn't make them bad tubes, but the quality to cost ratio is not as attractive as it used to be.

Just to be clear, the original ones used to be called "Svetlana" or "SED". The name Svetlana got sold to New Sensor and the original company was making, where they were being referred to as "Winged C". Those are the tubes we're talking about.

The current tubes being called "Svetlana" are decent tubes for the price. They sound ok, and they can handle high voltages. They were one of the few EL-34s that I could load into my 70's OR-120, as most tubes these days aren't designed for the screen grid voltages.

I used to run nothing but SED EL-34's. I'm on my last set now. I've been running Svetlana EL-34s and EH EL-34's and I'm pretty happy with both of those. They're cheap current production tubes. But they sound ok and get the job done reliably.
