PPC212 Build

Re: PPC212 Build
While I wait for my grill cloth, corners and rubber feet to arrive I dry fitted the cab with screws and popped in a pair of greenbacks so I could test it out, sounds pretty good! I'm trying to decide between using the rubber feet or attach Orange style wooden strips on the bottom for feet. What do you all think?
Re: PPC212 Build
The wood bars are supposed to "couple to the stage" and increase the bass or something. I've got cabs with both rubber feet and wood bars. Honestly I couldn't suggest one or the other as being better. I suppose the wood beams would be cheaper as you can just make them. So I say wood
Re: PPC212 Build
The rubber feet only cost like $4 and I ordered them but I'm still thinking about the wood strips just to go with the construction style of an Orange cab.Boy_Narf wrote: ↑Sun Jul 23, 2017 5:48 pmThe wood bars are supposed to "couple to the stage" and increase the bass or something. Re: PPC212 Build
I'd go with the wood skids for sure. Whether or not it makes a difference in sound for you, I personally find that they make the cab easier to transport, and they protect the tolex on the bottom from getting torn up when you're loading it into a car trunk or lugging it around.
Another option (what I do to all my combos and cabs with rubber feet) is to cut 2 small strips of oak molding from the hardware store and put them on the bottom of the cab. I paint/stain them black (to match most tolex) and put them between the rubber feet and the tolex (just drill holes so the rubber feet screws hold them in place under the feet). I really like having that wood there to let the bottom slide over things without tearing the tolex up. Then you can put a slip cover on the cab and it stays in nice shape.
I've never swapped back and forth between wood skids and rubber feet to listen for a difference in sound. I'd guess that it does actually make a slight difference.

Re: PPC212 Build
Parts arrived and I was able to install the grill cloth on the baffle easily last night, this stuff has little to no flexibility so it was easy to install by pulling it tight and stapling it. No prob! Tonight I'll pickup a 1/2" router bit to round over all the corners then do the finish sanding and hopefully before the end of this weekend I can get the cab painted and everything assembled to complete it. So far its been a fun project with great results.
Re: PPC212 Build
i think the wood skids are indestructible.. while dragging a cab with rubber feet may never seem like a good idea..

Re: PPC212 Build
Here it is all done, one home grown PPC212! It went together very quickly in the end, and you'll see I went with the rubber feet since I had them already and I didn't hear any sound difference with them, its a HUGE sounding cab. I didn't put the greenbacks back in, I went with a pair of Vox Wharfdale GHS-1230's I have which are a Celestion G12H30 clone, they have a more sharp attack than the greenbacks, more authority if you will. I'm very pleased with the end result, looks good sounds good! Eventually I might go with an MDF back panel, I find all ply cabs to have a boxy tonality about them and the MDF panel is the fix that I've used in other cabs. I might try tacking a piece of fabric or carpet inside on the back and see if I get the same result cuz I really like that ply back panel!

Looks great! Nice work! Always satisfying when you play it for the first time and it sounds as good as you hoped.

Re: PPC212 Build
Thank you. It sounds even better than I thought it would, I think the dimension is just right so it doesn't sound as boxy as I thought it would, the more I play it the more I like it. The GHS-1230's sound really good but I have one V30 I might pair up with a G12-65 I have and see how that sounds. I might look into getting a second V30 too if I like the way the one sounds.
