phase inverter in AD50

I have mostly used my ad50 cs on the 30watt setting and have never noticed an improved sound when changing the phase inverter to a 5751. However since having my amp biased and having changed the output tubes AND having bought an attenuator I am now able to drive the power amp section extremely hard and only use the 50watt setting now with my Les Paul. Does it make any sence that changing the phase inverter to a lower gain tube like the 5751 tightens things up a bit? I can´t really find a better describtion, but maybe my ears are just tired after hours of listening and swapping tubes ?

Not sure as I had never really focused on just changing out the phase inverter, but it sounds like the lower gain tube has effectively lowered the volume on your amp some as well and is why you are able to drive it harder. With driving the amp harder, it is probably going to sound better and different just on that principle alone.

Did the tube swap brighten the amp up any? I always thought the AD50 sounded a little too dark unless the volume was up to about 1 o'clock

It hasn´t really lowered the amp. Just seemed to tighten it up a bit. The trick with the darkness of the ad50 is deffinately to play with the presence knob and turn down the bass. I keep presence at 3 o´clock and bass at 10 o´clock. seems to me that me pushing the power amp section as hard as I do now makes it want a lower gain tube in the P.I.
