Post by Tom@thenewculture » Sun May 14, 2017 4:20 pm

Gear I currently use:

I'm looking to get a foos sorta sound out of my amp, and I have no idea where to begin.
Any help is much appreciated cheers!

I always just set the amp up with a medium amount of gain. Foo fighters is a mix of many different amps over the years. Fender, Mesa, Vox, Marshall, Peavy.

Bridge position humbucker.
Lots of mids.
Only as much gain as you need to to make the guitar signal distort (this will be below 5 on the gain knob on your amp)
10 or 11 gauge strings.
Hit the guitar. Hard.

As others have said, they have changed what they used quite a bit. But this is an easy type of tone to get. It's the bread and butter of any decent tube amp paired with a humbucker guitar.

Check out proguitarshop's opening demo of the EQD Palisades. I thought that was the closest FF recorded tone that I've heard from any non-FF setup.

Big Foo Fighters fan here.

It's less gain than you think it would be. I remember hearing that Dave sets his amp for his lead/solo tone and rolls down the volume for his main rhythm tone. Also, he has recently been seen with a Keeley Katana or an Xotic EP boost added to his board (in addition to his delay & phaser). Maybe he's using these to push even more gain from the amp? But, it's a mix of three guitars that give it the hugeness.
