So I was ripping apart my storage room to get to the PA for a rehearsal tomorrow and what did I find back there? My old Peavey Rage 158 red stripe. Ha, took me way back to say the least. Thought it would be funny to plug it in and WOW! There it is! The chime I've been looking for, and the funny thing? it has more clean headroom than my TT, and the V40 as well. I compared the cleans direct to my TT, and the Rage blew it away. The Orange of course destroyed it on the dirty tone :)

The speaker starts to distort a bit around 5, so I might look at upgrading the speaker, or even look into the 112 version of this guy. Just goes to show, wattage doesn't matter. It's all how the amp is voiced. What an interesting day. Preferring a practice amp over something nearly 20 times the price? Oh dear...what's happening to me?

Have you thought about something from the fender lineup?

OH WOW!

So they said, hey 30 day full money back just ship it back! OKAY GREAT DEAL SOUNDS GOOD! Just hit the shipper and holy moly! Talk about expensive, I'm going to consider that the restocking fee, so that I don't lose sleep over the cost of it :) hehe.

I found a Peavey bandit for next to nothing 3rd hand and as usual they went too far with the "tube" emulation. It starts to get hairy pretty quick. No biggie though, as I will be able to flip it quick. I do think it's the best so far clean headroom wise but not by much. With PA support it would do the job just fine. I have discovered during this quest that I am a fan of hifi solid state cleans and smaller speakers. As far as I see it I have three more options:

1. The quilter stuff.
2. Peavey Special Chorus: TOO HEAVY!
3. JC-120: ALSO TOO HEAVY!
4. Twin Custom 15: Rare to see one of these locally.

I am interested in the Quilter tone block and their new mini 2X8 frontier cab. Too expensive to ship and try blindly though.

Anyway you are all hearing it from me now. I QUIT SEARCHING FOR AN AMP! What I want doesn't exist or is simply too expensive/ to test out (learned my lesson from this amp that's for sure). Unless a Quilter rig or a 90 watt Mesa Electra Dyne combo shows up on the old Kijiji I'm throwing in the towel.

Shipping fully insured can be quite expensive.

There are some broking sites in the UK though, like interparcel.com or parcel2go.com, they are so much cheaper than going direct to the shipper it's crazy. Not sure if there's something similar where you are or if you are already using this.

Solid state cleans can be fantastic.
I used to have a H&K blue attax 40w in the late 90s, its cleans were wonderful. Really a thing of beauty, but more jazz that sparkly. They still sell on eBay occasionally and can be had for peanuts too, and they did a 100w version. But is it the type of cleans you've been looking for?

I've been wondering if you ever tried an AD30? The AD series all have fantastic cleans, and I'm thinking if you could play the waiting game, perhaps an AD140 would be your thing. But again.... perhaps not...... !!!!! ;)
