Open or closed back cabinet

Post by kars0747 » Thu Apr 06, 2017 8:35 pm

Just curious. What do you guys prefer and why? And do you find some settings work better with one or the other. I have the Orange 212 ob but have made a peace of wood that fits the hole so I have the choice between the two
Les Paul, Orange AD50 CS, ppc 212 ob with 3ow green back heritage (g12h 30) and a greenback (g12m), Boss tuner, Cry Baby, Electro Harmonix Electric Mistress, T-Rex replica and the orange sustain pedal

Always preferred open back, just because it fills the room more.

I like both concepts though I prefer the PPC212OB over the PPC212CB.

I think that's perfectly fine. I dont think one is better over the other. Different situations call for different measures. Open back can get muddy or too loose sounding.

Open for me.

My R30C sounds massive for what it is, where as running it through a 112 turns it into a beam machine. Closed might cut a bit better though.

Heck, just get a convertible cab so you can have both :)

Both?! Isn't that an option.

I tend to play my OB within lower wattage amps and my CB with higher wattage.

It is an option. The port city cabs are a nice cross between the two. Loved my clone.

I use my orange 212 ob as both an open and a closed back cabinett. I have made a piece of wood that fits the hole so I have both options. It seems to me though, that in most situations the open back sounds more full and natural than the closed back cabinett. But it is quite a new revelation to me. Still I use a closed home made cab at the bottom and put my orange 212 ob on top, vertically, so ofcourse that is part of the sound picture as well. It sounds way better than my 212 ob all by it self

Open back.

I use a 212 vertical cab that can be either open or closed back. In a direct comparison I much prefer the sound of the open back.

Open back cabs have less low end. If that's something that would negatively affect your music style, then I would suggest a closed back cab.

I wouldn't use an open back cab because of this.
