OR15 sound like a Rockerverb?

Post by jamme1961 » Mon Jan 09, 2017 8:48 pm

I love my OR15 but love to have the rockerverb clean channel too- if I went with a RV is the dirty channel a lot different then the OR? I've listen to some clips and they sound pretty close. thanks for any info

IMO, the RV can do all of what the OR15 does, but the OR15 can't do all of what the RV can do.

I loved the OR15 tone, but I found it way underpowered for what I do.

IMO all Orange amps sound pretty much, or can be set to sound the same. They each have their own noon base tones, but once you start tweaking it's more about amp feel than tonal differences. I've heard many an Orange amp shootout where both amps sound the same.

What you will get with a RV is more low-mid content and much more headroom. Are you looking at the 50, or 100? In reality when comparing a 15 watt amp to a 50+ watt amp, the tone of the higher wattage amp may not actually be better. It will however sound much thicker thanks to the added low end punch from the extra wattage. For me, I prefer to avoid overly boomy/bassy amps as I find it hard to dial out the muddiness (unless there is a full parametric EQ). I may get less thickness/bass out of my TT and R30 compared to my old RV100, but to me, the amp breakup sounds better, and the tone isn't muddy (raw tone sits better in a mix). I use my TT 90% of the time, but I'm starting to feel that it doesn't have enough power. My happy wattage land is right in the 30 watt area. Plenty loud enough for any gig, yet still has decent breakup without ruining everyone's ears.

What you need to do is test both amps. Regardless of sound, the feel of both amps will be different for sure. You will have to ultimately decide for yourself. But yes, as the above fellow said, you can get the RV to sound pretty darn close if not identical to the OR15.

I remember trying the OR15 and thinking it sounded just like my RV50 dirty channel....

So pretty similar in my opinion.

It's basically the Rockerverb preamp, possibly changes in some component values. I'm basing that off the OR15 and #4 Terror share the same PCB and the #4 is a Rockerverb preamp.

thanks for the info - I was looking at the 50 watt -old classic rock guy and have been loving the or15 at home but
the old band is calling and that got me thinking about the RV. If the band get going I'll try out the or15 first and take it from there. I think 30 watts would be about perfect (as mentioned) I see the ad30htc going cheap and it has the two channels but have no idea about the tone. No one around me carrys orange so, have to ask questions and listen to youtube. YT is tough a lot of the models sound very close(as mentioned). Were there any problems with the ad30? ( i think its discontinued) how does it compare sound wise? thanks again for the time on this.d

Another great 30 watts Orange amp is the Dual Terror. Also two channels but no gimmicks and a lot of tone. For me it nails the classic rock thing perfectly :!:

To be honest, 30 or 50w doesn't make much difference. It's bloody loud!!!!

The AD30 is a great amp too, though very different to the RV50.
If you can buy it cheap, it's a good way to try it. If you don't like it, you can sell it with probably no loss.

Hi, old classic rock guy ? Definately check out the ad30htc or ad30tc ( its the single channel ad 30 that is discontinued not the 2 channel version).....although the twin channel is frequently referred to as the ad30!! Which can be confusing.

They are rock solid with no issues, built like tanks.

I've owned both Rv50 mkii and ad30htc but much prefer the ad30htc , not much clean headroom mind at loud volume but excels at clean but sligjtly dirty tones and channel one sounds fantastic for dirty crunch. Also great with OD pedals and boosts .

RV more modern sounding like the OR...but the clean channel on the RV mk11 is not OD or boost friendly.

Pretty sure the TC at the end of AD30TC stands for twin channel, and generally refers to the combo version. The addition of the H in AD30HTC signifies that it's the Head configuration. :)

I don't think there's any official way to differentiate between the single channel and twin come to think of it. :?

Same here, the sound is excellent. It will be good to see what they bring out next.
