CR120

Post by mj6thbuif » Sun Dec 04, 2016 8:25 pm

Would the CR120 make a good backup for my TH30 for gigging? How do each channel compare. Was hoping not to spend more than the cost of the CR.

Hi,
sorry, this is a bit short as I am just about to go out, but that is exactly why I bought my CR120 head, originally as a backup for my TH30 combo. However, it's pretty damn good in its own right so don't just think of it as a backup, you might end up with it being your GOTO amp. You can get very similar tones and yes, it probably doesn't "feel" like a tube amp, but I reckon a lot of that is in my mind. Go and try one out, that's all I can recommend.
Cheers

I got to try one about a month ago before even considering it as a backup. My first impression was that it sounded a lot more expensive than the $450 tag. That was only at guitar store volume though so it woukd have been hard to comoare it to my TH30. If I can find it used, that be a steal.

Yes, the TH30 would be a great backup to the CR120H. :D

I have a CR120H, and it's a great amp, SS or not. It does not sound like a typical SS amp; much closer to tubes than I've ever heard. But still has it's own thing going on. I love mine. For that price point, I don't think there's a better amp out there, SS or tube.

As an owner of a TH30 head, I first bought a CR120 head as a backup unit. Now, it sounds so amazing that I next used it as may main amp for gigs !!! :D :D :D :D

Amazing backup! Go for it. My bandmates can't tell the difference between my CR120 and RV3 anyway. :-D

I got to try them at Guitar Center side by side and I could tell the difference, but to me it wasn't a $1000+ difference. The difference was not very great, imo. And my bandmates or people that would come to see us wouldn't know the difference anyway.

Yikes, that M/B cab sounded way better than the PPC212. It wasn't even close.

I'd love to hear a PPC412 vs M/B Recto cab comparison.

No comparison. The Mesa cab is far far better. The best cab I have ever tried with a RV3!! ... and the most expensive ;-)

They are worth running as a main amp. With a ts type od in front it covers any style and sounds sweet. I get compliments from tube guys frequently. It is also very loud. I have the head And 3.5 on the volume is enough for a loud rock/metal band live.
And the head is heavy for a ss amp. Has a beefy transformer in it. Also very durable. Been gigging with mine since I got it back in June with no issues.

Seems like a lot of love for the Cr120 around here. What do you guys say to those who claim SS is no good when cranked? How loud will this thing go before the sound turns to crap? Will it do a small outdoor gig (100 people) unmic'd?

Easily. 3.5 on the master volume, or 10:30 if you go by o'clock settings, is loud enough for most applications. Assuming channel volume is maxed. I have played out door unmicd shows no problem. Rivals the lead guitarists XXX no problem.

I have tried cranking mine, but after half way it's just too loud. I run mine through a B52 LS412a.

For a ss, it sounds better louder. At low volume I can hear a bit fizz and sounds a little muffled. Cranking it really let's it breathe and it just roars. Pushes the air and low end really well.

Good to know. Thanks for that.
