Ppc212 or Marshall 1960AV

Post by FIREpunkMEDIC » Sun Jul 31, 2016 4:56 pm

Playing a RV MKIII 100 water through a Marshall 1960AV with vintage 30s. Considering for the sake of size going down to an orange closed back 2x12. Other guitar player has a 4x12 and bass player uses a 2x15. Will I get drown out? We play a punk style like Bad Religion meets Hot Water Music. Also what kind of tonal difference could I expect. I know it's same speakersize just less of them and different cab.

i would assume that the 4x12 is going to be a lot bassier (lol) compared to the 2x12. other than that i am not sure. almost an orange to apples comparison. see what i did there? :P

It depends on the kind of volumes that you play at, and where you sit in the mix in the band. If you aren't cranking (and I mean really cranking) that amp up, the 2x12 will do just fine. If you're really playing the amp wide open and dial a lot of low end in, you're not going to be happy with a 2x12 (in fact, it will stress the 2x12 cab quite a bit as well). If you rely on midrange, you'll likely be just fine.

The Orange 2x12 sounds big for a 2x12, but it's a bit directional. That being said, the response from pushing 2 V30's (as opposed to 4) will feel better and it will be more touch sensitive.

It really just depends on what you need and how you use the amp. There's no right answer here.

I have a PPC212, it's a brilliant cab - and I Dare not crank my RV50 through it, it's just too painful. I mean, u have done it, but it makes the floors board rattle, the window shake, and the ear buzzing after is madness.....

I Would think the PPC212 would be plenty enough really.
At the end of the day, if you can't be heard with a 100W head and a PPC212, then both the restoration tour band are too loud and yiu (all) need to be mic'd through the PA.

Agree with LPL. Cranked the RV50 MKI through the 212 cab a week ago and my ears are still bleeding. It is a great cab. It shakes the room and is VERY directional. Do not stand directly in front of it. Don't worry, with a 100W head and this cab, you well be both heard and felt.
