Heya guys, I am trying to put together a decent set up for my Stoner Rock project. I dont want to break the bank. I am looking using a CR120 head with a PPC212.
Questions are, with the PPC212 do I want open or closed back? Is the head going to do the job? Ill be getting most my sound from my fuzz pedals. I want enough to play live.
Ill be playing downtuned a full step at least as well as some stuff at c standard. Really after a good fuzz sound too.
Thanks guys.
CR120 and a PPC212 for stoner rock?

If you are just planning to run a single 2X12 I would say go for the OB. Bit more sound dispersion, and should be a bit less focused/more bassy. Otherwise, get a PPC412.
I used to run a BAT Pharoah through my RV100 and PPC412. It was insane. More low end than my bass rig haha.

The open back actually has less bass than the closed back 212 cab. But the sound dispersion of the OB212 fills the space better.
For stoner / heavy rock, most people would chose the PPC212) (closed back), because it has more low end, and is punchier, more focused...... But Also very directional - contrary to the open back Ob212 which you hear better everywhere.
My opinion is that massive low end is the territory of the bass guitar player, and the only reason you should chose the PPC212 is if you really need the extra punch it provides.... At The expense of sound dispersion.
I have the PPC212 myself, it's a mighty fine cab. Almost impossible to lift on your own without breaking your back, but mighty fine.

Yes.
I play 'stoner rock' and use a CR120H with 2x PPC112's. It sounds great and loud. Here's a thread with a sample: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=54799" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: CR120 and a PPC212 for stoner rock?
I have the cr120 and it can do stoner and doom on its own just fine. Clean channel takes pedals well though, even with it cranked up for a bit of grit.
I put the gain at about 2 o'clock and play the neck pickup on my l.p. and it growls. A bit more gain will bring out some fuzz too! Works great covering Electric Wizard. Sounds great for playing Funeralopolis.

My cat loves the Orange tone!

sounds like what im after. I like the option to be able to go to another 212 later if I want.lunchbox wrote:Yes.

Re: CR120 and a PPC212 for stoner rock?
I have a CR120H linked to a PPC212OB for playing stoner metal, that sounds nice !
Re: CR120 and a PPC212 for stoner rock?
IME the PPC212CB is much more punchy, but if you position the OB at the right position in the room it has way more bass response. TBH, once a stoner band gets to stage volume there will be so much bass it won't matter haha. The CB might be the better option to help punch through as I'm assuming the bass player is eating the mix with dirt and fuzz pedals.
Re: CR120 and a PPC212 for stoner rock?
They're just closed back PPC112 cabs with V30s. IMO, 2xPPC112 have a little better spread than a 1xPPC212 on its side, since the top speaker is up higher/further apart than in a 212. I may lose a little low end, but as you can probably hear from the recording, it's not enough to make it sound thin. I'd say it's negligible.MacPark wrote:

CR120 for Stoner Rock? Yes. And some!
The cab depends on your situation, in terms of getting it from A to B & back again as with other aspects that have already been mentioned. The 4x12 CRPRO might be worth considering too, personally I'm considering one for my CR120C 2x12 combo, 6x "12 speakers at volume sounds immense.
What I love about the CR120 is that it's based on '70s Solid State technology albeit with a modern twist, it has that vintage warmth and "roughness" to it, and the cleans are just great, the Dirty Channel is the real test I believe for Solid State amps. A lot of them have nice cleans, sound pretty nice on the dirty channels at lower volumes but muddy out once you start cranking the volume, often doesn't get any louder per se but just pushes the speaker(s) a bit harder. The CR120 is nothing like that on the Dirty Channel, you get lots of dirt/gain and you get shed loads of volume via the Master section and the louder it gets the better it sounds. And, it's a very loud amplifier indeed.
You said you wanted a Fuzz?... Check out Minotaur Sonic Terrors out of Greece. They only do two pedals at the moment, very small boutique company, made to order - hand made and signed & dated. They do a, two-in one I guess, Fuzz & Burn and another called the Evil Eye Fuzz which is the one I recently bought. It's based on a vintage and fully cranked Matamp/Orange with a fully cranked Fuzz in the front and has sounds easily capable of mimicking Electric Wizard, Black Sabbath, Sunn O))) etc. Very simple, but insane.
