New ROCKERVERVERB 100 MKIII owner!

Post by FIREpunkMEDIC » Fri Jul 08, 2016 2:26 am

Hey guys!
Just stepped out of the Marshall camp into A RV100 MKIII and sweet HELL!! Goodbye Marshall. Now I am playing through a Marshall 1960AV (vintage 30s), but I am considering getting the matching orange 4x12 to replace it. Is there that much of a difference tonewise between the two and is it worth the going for? BTW, I play in a punk rock band, think Hot Water Music meets Bad Religion. CHEERS!

NICE. Congrats. How do you like the attenuator feature? I've seen only favorable raves, so that always piques my interest. Long may your beastie ROCK you

Shooting in the dark here just a bit as I've never played through an Orange 4x12 and have only played Marshall heads through Marshall 4x12s, but since both are using Vintage 30s, I can't imagine the sound will be much different (especially if you're being consistent regarding open back or closed back between the two). Speakers and open/closed back are what affect the tone of a cab the most.

Has anyone done a shootout between the two to verify/counter what I'm saying?

I'd also suggest you A-B them. Orange cabs are thicker and warmer sounding. Marshall cabs use the same speakers (most of the time) but are thinner and brighter and therefore may be good for your tone. It's too subjective to say.

a decent comparison of an orange 4x12 vs a marshall 4x12. and goes along with what alexauxier said.

We do a lot of punk and honestly the orange 212 closed back does really well.... but hell if you've got the room go for the 412.... or maybe 2 212's for even more awesomeness :D

I'm surprised. I actually preferred the tone of the Marshall in that video comparison. The Orange sounded like it had a blanket overtop. I'm sure changing the amp EQ to go along with the Orange would help it out quite a bit.

Congrats! Those are great amps.

One thing I've noticed about Orange gear: it sounds best when used with the speakers and amps it was designed with, where amps like Marshalls have a more forgiving tone that can be used with almost any speaker, cab, etc. So in that video the Marshall cab sounded good with an M/B Recto with EV's (which have always paired well with M/B amps, imo) but the Orange cab didn't sound as good. But had the amp been an Orange and the cab had V30's, vintage Greenbacks or Fanes, it probably would have sounded better than the Marshall. ymmv

Thanks guys!! I'm at the firehouse today reading these, but will post pics in the next couple of days. Still trying to get a chance to A/B the two cabs. Hopefully in the next week or so I can. As far as the attenuator goes it was a big factor in why I bought this amp and it does NOT disappoint. Power tube break up at low volumes!!! Don't get me wrong, NOTHING compared to when you can just unleash this baby. After owning a LOT of really nice Marshalls, and a Soldano Hot Rod 50 THIS is is the best amp I've ever played. Amazing tone and endless versatility. Orange, I'm a lifer!

hmmmm. Thats a good video. Things I like and dislike in both cab. One lacks in one area but excels in another compared to the other and vice versa which leads me to think they'd sound great together!

+1 what Alex said above

The orange cabs have larger internal volume and a more solid construction...and those (thicker, warmer) are the benefits you would expect, with the addition of perhaps slightly more bass extension and a higher probability of a hernia. :D
