New cab day

Post by lunchbox » Tue Apr 19, 2016 3:30 am

So here's the first of my two PPC112's. The other (an Orange one) should be here by Friday, which just so happens to be the same day that I'm supposed to jam with a new drummer and we're going to try to put together a band.

This will be my new rig: CR120H into 2 x PPC112's for a mini stack. I love the tone of the one that came today (has a V30). Can't wait to hear it loud with both cabs!

I'm thinking of putting my amp between the two cabs, like the photo but add another PPC112 on top of my amp. That would give me some really good spread and be just below shoulder height for me at 5'7". I should be able to hear myself a lot better than having it pointed at my knees. Anyone seen/tried this before?

I like it!

Personally I wouldn't put a cab on top of the head. I know it's not tube so it shouldn't overheat but I don't think the extra weight is good.

I agree or increase the risk of damaging or making the head and it's probably not going to be good for your ears.

One cab on top of the other will be just fine

Nice!
I also thought about getting a black one when I needed another PPC112, but my OCD had the last word.
Anyway another vote here for not putting the head between cabs.
First reason it's called head!
And then practical stuff, you don't have to reach down for turning the knobs.
And don't worry about hearing yourself, I (6,4 feet) have my PPC's stacked too and hear my amp perfectly.
Believe me it's a big difference going from one 112 on the ground to two of them stacked.

My OCD wouldn't allow a black cab either. As a matter of fact, I still can't grasp why Orange would make a cab that isn't, well... orange.

Thanks everyone. I think you're all right; I'll just stack them normally.

When I first saw the black tolex on an Orange I didn't like it. But after a while the cane grill cloth and white pinstripe started looking really nice. I like them a lot now and could go either way. I was going to buy two orange ones, but I went for the best deals I could find, and this was one of them.

I'm really stoked on this setup. Of course I'd love to own an OR50 and PPC412, but family and life situation won't allow for that. But this is a great rig in its own right, and affordable for me. Can't wait to blast it on Friday!

I think you'll be happy with 2 x 112 cabs. I had the CR60 combo for a few months, nice sounding amp for sure. I ended up moving when I picked up used Rocker 30 combo.

Anyway, see below... I like having dual 112's. Gives me a lot of flexibility with the amps I have, just missing an external open back option.

I'll get some photos up when I get the other cab. Can't wait to hear it all together.

So I got the other cab and here's how it looks:

Image

My Orange CR120H mini stack. Sounded really good jamming the other night. It was plenty loud, plenty of low end and had nice spread. It's just that the drummer sucked. lol. I'm digging this setup. It cost me under $1000 for everything and does the job well.

Looks groovy!

Mini Stack with big sound and for "little"* money!
Congratulations, now go and kick some tubesnifer's
a$$es!

* little is relative, under 1000 can be a lot of cash,
I'm talking from experience here.

Thanks! Yes, I'm digging it. Toans are fat and thick; can get really, really LOUD. 120 watts is a lot of power, and this thing can push some serious air.

I was worried about what the PPC112's were going to sound like, as in maybe not enough balls/low end. That might hold true if you're only running one cab, but with 2 cabs they had no problem providing loud, thick, ballsy tone and plenty of low end (though I don't doubt it would have more with a closed back 2x12 or 4x12). But plenty of low end, for me anyway.

Don't be afraid of running 2 x PPC112's vs a PPC212. They sound great when running two of them. The top cab is also higher off the ground which can make it easier to hear.
