1976 OR120 or OD120
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if I could get some help getting my head around the 70's OR/OD amps.
I've been looking around for an OR120 for quite a while now , and finally tracked one down.
The "problem" is , the amp is from 1976 and has a master volume , doesnt this makes the amp an OD120 ?
on the back of the amp it is labeled as an OR120.
So I'm kind of wondering what I would be getting if I decide to buy.
Here is the link of the guy selling his Orange
http://www.marktplaats.nl/a/muziek-en-i ... ousPage=lr
there are some new potmeters, 4 matched el34's and 2 ECC-83 JJ tubes in there.
That's the only thing that has changed.
Besides that, would 1200€ be a fair price? that"s about 1370$
I'll have to sell my Bogner Shiva for it. I love the cleans on it, but can't seem to justify keeping such an expensive amp for the clean tones itself. the OD and Boost channel just don't cut it for me.
I'm actually only looking after 2 tones:
Jesse Lacey from Brand New plays a od80 that has been modded to 120 watts output
And then Nicke Andersson from the Sweden band The Hellacopters, who plays an OR120
two totally different bands/sounds, but two of my favorite guitarplayers...
So my guess that I can't go wrong with the 120 ?
Any input ?
Thanks in advance, and my apologies for the long post
Cheers,
Dimitri

Re: 1976 OR120 or OD120
It's an OR120M. The Orange Overdrive is the master volume amp, which is really amazing sounding. The model number on the back would become OR120M in a short while - it wouldn't be until the reissues come out that there is an OD120 model.
If it works, €1200 is probably a great price....

For what it's worth, the reissues only said "OR80" or "OR120" regardless of master volume or not. I don't think there has ever been an Orange actually labeled OD-anything.....

You're right.
In thinking about it, I'm not sure there ever was an OD120 distinction... even the OTR's said OR80 on the back! here's my picture comparing a vintage OR80M with the same amp as reissue and it's designated OR80:

The labels on that picture are awesome. Is that the DeLorean font? Ha!

Sure we've been here before. I used to think that too, but there definitely were some OD120s put out. Typical Orange chaos really but yeah, the OD120 exists...Gladmarr wrote:I don't think there has ever been an Orange actually labeled OD-anything.....

Maybe. I didn't see any pictures that actually said OD120 on the back in those threads....

While I'm at it ...
Would my Bogner 2X12 OS cabinet be able to handle the 120 watts the Orange will deliver? ( 2 celestion V30's )

I'm gonna give you a definite "maybe" on that. Celestion speakers are pretty conservatively rated. You probably will be just fine. For example, I run my 412 with four Celestion G12-H30s and I have for years. I have had no problems running my 90s OD120 through it.

Re: 1976 OR120 or OD120
Running flat out, it will give the speakers a serious workout. These amps have a lot of low end on tap. So if you hear your speakers working too hard, back things off a bit. Though, most people don't play anywhere that you can run an OR-120 flat out, so you should be fine.dimitri858 wrote:While I'm at it ...

Re: 1976 OR120 or OD120
I've been collecting pictures of Orange amps for some time now - none of them say OD120 or OD80 for a model number. In fact, the OTR's don't say OTR80, etc. on the back - they all say OR80 or OR120.
Until I actually see a picture of the back of an amp that says OD for model, I feel pretty certain that they all say OR. I know the thread references one but there is zero supporting photographic evidence that I've seen.
I'd love to be wrong....

Re: 1976 OR120 or OD120
I'm not sure i've seen any labelled as such. But I wouldn't be surprised...Orange seems to use that nomenclature: https://orangeamps.com/heritage/legacy- ... ive-od120/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;bclaire wrote:I've been collecting pictures of Orange amps for some time now - none of them say OD120 or OD80 for a model number.
